The recent spike in armed robberies in Greenville continued Sunday night.

The latest target was the Wilco Hess gas station at 3000 South Memorial Dr. Police say a man held the store clerk up around 10:30 p.m. Sunday.

This armed robbery featured a terrifying twist, however. Greenville Police say there were customers in the store when the gunman came in. There were also three children there, ages five, six and nine. The presence of customers did not deter the gunman from holding up the store.

The store clerk was pistol-whipped during the robbery. The robber also fired his gun, police say. Luckily, no one was hurt. The robber escaped with stolen cash. The clerk sought medical treatment for the head injury.

to lyn in blounts creek, nc: what a great comment! i wish people would just hush about what time the kids were out...they don't know the situation, they could have carried someone to the hospital, focus on the stupid fool that robbed the store.

Comment Edited.

Did it ever occur to anybody that the family may have been traveling and on their way back home? Bed time isn't sacred to many parents these days. Stay focused on the idiot that was robbing the store.

Posted by: Mike on May 6, 2008 at 06:15 AM
To mouth: Yeah, that's all we need... the magic pill of more "programs". NO! What is needed is more parents to get off their arse and get involved in what their children are doing. A kid can't sell dope or run with a gang if his/her Mama is hanging with them all the time.

Posted by: chica Location: greenville on May 5, 2008 at 04:54 PM
Ok, I think some people are missing the point of the story. Its not about the kids being in the store at 10:30pm. its about a robbery taking place where people of all ages go to. It seems like some people are saying their should be an I.D check before you enter a store after 9:00pm. Lets try not to judge the parent and her kids who were in the store. lets just be happy for them that they were not hurt, send are concerns to the gas station attendent, and pray for the young soul, who thought that robbing a store was a good choice.

funny, you think more police would cause more crime but Charlotte's mayor increased their police force and their # of deaths decreased dramatically. Perhaps if they did increase the # of officers, we wouldn't have all these robberies.

We must look at the big picture here. The only people who rob gas stations and "ez marts" are poor misled youth and the occasional drug addict. We need more youth intervention programs in our community. More police equal more legal gunmen on the street. This will only ignite more violence and leading to bigger gun crimes and more threat on the street. We have to make a living situation where all citizens are taken care of(even the poor). I'm not saying people need a "free lunch" to be a law abiding citizens. These types of acts can be prevented in the home with family 1st and backed up by a good education system. A educational system that makes it "cool" to be in school. I see more youth on the streets than on the school bus. Let's face it the U.S. is a violent place, where its easier to get a gun than it is to get a decent loan for a college education. Poor people are locked out of the American dream. I saw we kick the door down and break the social barrier!! Divided we fail!

OMG Bill, I can not believe in this day and time you would leave your kids in a car unattended. That is a good way to loose them. Either by someone kidnapping them or the police seeing them in the car unattended and well taking them. It is illegal to leave kids in a car unattended. As far as the crime in Greenville it is out of hand and I agree with need more police that g'ville does need more police.

Kids that age, at that time of night, should be at home in bed, not out at a convienience store. I applaud the parent for not leaving the children home alone, but I cant find an acceptable reason for having kids out that late, unless going to the hospital. If the children were home, they would never have been in harms way.

i can't believe it ... a robbery in greenville: geez, that's so unlikely.....

Posted by: Mother Location: Greenville on May 5, 2008 at 12:42 PM
Before we pass judgement about these kids being out that late, we should think about this person and their circumstances. Maybe they work 2nd shift or a night shift somewhere. These kids could have been on their way home or on the way to a daycare or sitter. No matter what, they should not have been left in the car by no means. This story could have another twist of fleeing gunman stealing car to get away and taking 3 kids that were left in it. Just thankful that the kids and customers were not harmed. Hope the employee is better as well.

It's amazing what can happen in 10 years. I agree with Will. I try not to go out after dark. We are in serious need of more police. Go to New Bern and you see a cop on every corner. That's what we need. I'm thinking of getting a concealed weapons permit.

Posted by: Someone Location: anywhere, NC on May 5, 2008 at 11:22 AM
Bill, you think leaving them in the car is any smarter? Duh

Posted by: Will Location: Williamston on May 5, 2008 at 11:05 AM
I remember as a teenager/early 20's going to Greenville every weekend with friends, dating, etc. Now, 15 years later and a father of two kids; I would NEVER let them go to Greenville at night alone at the age I was then! I, for one, try to be out of Greenville before the sun goes down. Not that crime doesn't happen during the daytime, but at least I can see what's coming. It's a shame a city that has so much to offer can't get a lid on crime.

Posted by: Confused Location: Greenville on May 5, 2008 at 11:03 AM
So Bill, you think leaving your child in a car at 10:30 p.m. is safer than taking them in a store with you? How about not having your kids out on a school night at 10:30 p.m. That seems like the best idea!

Posted by: Bill Location: Greenville on May 5, 2008 at 09:42 AM
It's sad to think about all the thugs robbing folks today. And why would you have your 5,6 and 9 yr old in a store at 10:30pm. I leave mine in the car.

Posted by: Mike Location: Winterville on May 5, 2008 at 08:48 AM
The judicial system is too lenient on these types of crimes. A criminal that is willing to commit this level of crime is of no value to society. Hard prison time (20 years) at minimum. Tax payers should not be responsible to support those in prison. No medical, no dental, no extra curricula activities, only hard labor.

Posted by: Bea Location: Washington on May 5, 2008 at 08:14 AM
Children ages 5, 6 and 9 out in a store at 10:30 at night? Thank goodness they were not injured.

Posted by: Debbie Location: Greenville NC on May 5, 2008 at 08:04 AM
I just think that there has been enough robberies in Greenville. Even though you can't stop them all but something else can be done to stop these people from robbing.I am from KY and there are stores there that do not let you come in you have to give the clerk your list of what you want and he or she is protected with a bullet proof glass. That may be one way to stop these people from robbing these business. Also the clerks might just feel more safter.Invest in something like that and your money will stop walking out the door.
