ECU head football coach John Thompson announced his resignation at a 3:00 p.m. press conference Wednesday at the Murphy Center at ECU.

Thompson says he met with Athletic Director Terry Holland and Chancellor Steve Ballard Tuesday night. The two told him they were going to terminate his contract at the end of the season. Thompson says he has accepted their settlement proposal and will coach the remaining two games of the season.

Thompson's resignation comes less than two years after taking over the job from Steve Logan. Thompson says, "It was an honor and privilege to be at a place like ECU." He also stated, "It is not the players fault. In this bottom line business, we didn't win as many games as some people think we should have. We didn't win enough games; we didn't have enough time."

Thompson said his only regret is that his family will not be able to see the enjoyment of all of their sacrifices.
