Going potty without a partner can lead to punishment for students at a Burgaw elementary school, but parents want the policy flushed.

The Star-News of Wilmington reports that students at Malpass Corner Elementary School can't use the bathroom alone because of an ongoing graffiti problem. A letter to parents from the principal says students can go to the bathroom as a class or in pairs.

Students who go to the bathroom when they aren't supposed to are punished with a silent lunch. They must sit at a table and eat lunch alone without talking.

Parent Jaime Whitmore describes the policy as "cruel and unusual punishment." Some parents are organizing to get the policy changed.

Ya know I am getting tired of hearing about childrens bathrooms. THis is the # what story about bathroom usuage? And there are always a few parents that say well if they gotta go they gotta go. And I agree with that to a certain extent. But at a certain age these kids have to learn bladder control. They should be able to sit in class for an hour without running out to pee. If they can't do that now then what are they going to do when they grow up and get a job? Not everyjob in the world lets you go to the bathroom whenever you please. They need to learn now to work on this. I mean can you see one of these kids as a surgeon with a patient on the operating table, and leaving the patient there because they need a bathroom break. And actually Mike, learning to hold your fluids for reasonable times actually helps you build muscles in your bladder, which in fact helps later in life. Because those gotta go moments are usually due to poor bladder muscles or muscle spasms in the bladder.

Well maybe they sould make the whole school stop their education when someone has to go to the restroom. That is insane i can't understand what make the walls of the restroom so valuable more valuable than a student education but not just one two students have to go to the restroom. So do they both get silent lunch i think they have gone to far come on. If a student is in class having to go to the restroom then they are not focus on the tasks at hand so when they return to the class room they sould be easier to get back on task than to keep focus when they are only thinking about having to go to the restroom. Really is this what the school system has come to. Do the teachers have to go in pairs or do they get silent lunchs for going to the restroom. There are study saying that holding your fluids can effect you later in life like not being able to hold you fluids. (Got to go Got to go right now) Maybe that why you have to go...

Seems that when I was in elementary school we went as a class anyway. Why is it cruel punishment now?
