Man Will Spend 72 Years For Three Holdups Save Email Print

A man has been sentenced to more than 72 years in federal prison for robbing two insurance agencies and a bank here in Eastern Carolina.

Henderson Hinton was found guilty in December for holding up the Southern Bank branch in Scotland Neck, Bennett Insurance Services in Rocky Mount, and National Insurance in Ahoskie. Prosecutors say in each holdup Hinton pointed a gun at the victims and demanded money.

The feds say Hinton got $1,429 in the Ahoskie robbery, $1,074 and just $10 from the holdup in Rocky Mount.

Hinton was released from prison in 2003, after being convicted of holding up a bank in Greenville the year before.

I guess no one else caught it. He was "released in 2003, after being convicted of holding up a bank in Greenville the year before." You mean he got a whole year for holding up a bank??? Some people get more time than that for writing bad checks. What's up with this? What happened to the federal offense charges?

Posted by: Mike Location: Edenton on May 14, 2008 at 05:19 AM
72 years is nothing. The article says he was released for another bank robbery a year into his sentence. State law says 20 years for bank robbery with 7 years mandatory. So what's up with that?

Posted by: Chris on May 13, 2008 at 06:00 PM
The crime has nothing to do with the sentencing. In NC they have what is called structured sentencing and someone can only get the time that they fall into. This is affected by the number of prior charges, the types of charges, and of course Robbing a Bank is a Federal Offense, so that is why he faced more time. It has nothing to do with another charge.

Its like D said the laws in this state are really screwed up and I'll tell you look for more of this stuff with all these gas prices like they are And I also feel like dave He got what he Deserved

I have to agree with D. You would think people charged with murder & sex crimes would see this type of punishment also.

Posted by: D on May 13, 2008 at 11:07 AM
I'm all for punishment, but it is sad when a person can get 72 years for this crime, but harming children brings in much lesser of a sentence. When did our priorities get so messed up?
