The U.N. has agreed to send additional relief flights after
briefly suspending its operations Friday. It acted after Myanmar
seized two planeloads of food.
The government has only a few dozen helicopters and 15 transport
planes of its own to use in the relief effort. The plight of nearly two million survivors is expected to get worse over the next several days with heavy rain in the forecast.
An emergency coordinator with the International Rescue Committee
says in some villages nearly all the homes were destroyed and
survivors have virtually no clean water. He says the potential for
an even more massive health disaster grows with each passing day.
Diplomats warn the death toll could eventually exceed 100,000.
The American Red Cross has contributed $250,000 to relief efforts and is prepared assist the Myanmar Red Cross with additional aid and supplies, estimated at $1.25 million.
