Court Documents Say Ch. 12 Photographer Worked For Adult Nightclub Save Email Print

Court documents allege that a photographer for WCTI-TV had worked for an adult business that sheriff deputies say he tipped off.

Eugene Shelton was arrested yesterday for interfering with law enforcement officers.

Shelton and other members of the news media were invited to go along on the raid of Club Mickeys on May 3rd.

But according to an affidavit that was part of a search warrant for Shelton's cell phone, the news photographer told his reporter he would not be able to go on the raid because he knew too many people who frequented the club.

The affidavit says a confidential and reliable informant told investigators that Shelton had a side business capturing video and photographs. The informant told deputies that he has seen footage that Shelton shot inside the nightclub and Shelton even worked for the business.

Deputies say when they arrived at the raid, the manager told them "I knew ya'll were coming, I just got a text message on my phone."

Shelton was released on a $1,000 bond and has been suspended from his job at Channel 12.

Thursday's Story

WCTI-TV has suspended a news photographer after his arrest Thursday.

Eugene Shelton is accused of tipping off people at a nightclub that was about to be raided by sheriff deputies.

The Onslow County Sheriff's Office says Shelton was at a briefing May 3rd just before deputies raided Club Mickey's. Members of the media, including WITN News, were brought into the law enforcement briefing prior to the raid.

Shelton was overheard telling a co-worker "I can't go, I can't go." A few minutes later Shelton was seen texting on his cell phone.

Also the documents say that some of that evidence that was known to be in the club and was being sought during the raid, was not at the club and had been moved shortly before the deputies arrival.

A sheriff's department spokesman says today's arrest came after they obtained search warrants for Shelton's cell phone records.

The news photographer was released on a $1,000 unsecured bond.

WITN News attempted to reach Shelton, but his cell phone was not accepting any messages.

Shelton is a photographer for WCTI's news bureau in Jacksonville.

Don Fisher, General Manager at WCTI-TV, said the station is saddened by the arrest. Fisher told us the employee has been suspended, and the station is conducting an internal investigation.

My comment wasn't to promote crime & denounce order in society but to actually think about what he was faced with before passing judgement. And why would I even be writing on a News bullentin comment board if i were a "organized" criminal. That's not good criminal ethics dont you think. Im just a citizen with a opinon like everyone else on this board. Do you ever think that maybe the so called criminals did the same thing u would do if you were faced with that particular situation. You'll never know b/c you're never there; only reading & responding safely from your home or office PC. Like I said before no one knows the real struggle who passes judgment. I rather embrace and coach rather than to scold and punish harshly. Only in this case and this case only.

So John Smith, If you are not being paid well, its fine to commit a crime.

Mouth of The Hood: So you are a part of organized crime or are associated with organized crime. Do you know your email can be traced.

Hope he gets what he deserves. And give me a break. Looking out for his wonderful buddies and associates? At an adult club being raided? I somehow doubt they were being raided for something like not paying their electric bill, so just how wonderful can these associates be? Someone mentioned he won't be able to get a good job because of the confidentiality issue....well he shouldn't be able to! I sure wouldn't want him to have access to any of my private information! He has proven where his priorities are.

To MOUTH: Your attitude toward crime is exactly one reason there is so much crime in Greenville and everywhere else! Wise up!

Posted by: John Smith Location: Jacksonville on May 9, 2008 at 07:22 PM
Leave the guy alone, I used to work with the guy at the same News Station. He's been doing side jobs because WCTI 12 doesn't pay well at all. Most of everyone who works there is broke. They give a 5% raise every year. Eugene shouldn't have sent a TEXT from his phone, and the club owner should have not send he knew they were coming. Where's the trust there. Using a simple pay phone would have solved all his problems.

How many times is it going to take before the police and other law enforcement authorities realize that the media is not always trustworthy? Everyone knows ratings are more important than catching criminals. Also since the club's manager was tipped off about the raid and people were still arrested then he and those arrested have got to be total idiots!

He's a real person who looked out for his friends and associates to keep the them for doing prison time for non violent crimes. As you know the gov't throws the book at organized criminals. He made decision to jeopardize his job for the people in his life that maybe are more loyal & maybe more valuable to him than his job. I say it's a hard decision to make; when you're putting yourself on the line like that. But it wasn't selfish nor stupid because he sacrifice his personal gain for his friends. It maybe stupid to the eyes of the person passing judgement, but you cannot deny the principle. He took a stand and now he has to face the cosequences of GETTING CAUGHT. How many of you could do something like that to help someone u care about. That's the answer that is up to be measured. Or I could be totally wrong & he could have been trying save his own butt for having his hand's in cookie jar and the king's men were coming for the sweets. Who knows we are not that man.

To Chris. Did you know a manager at WITN was charged with cyber stalking. Is this story up here anywhere?

Editor's Note: A former manager at WITN, who has not worked at the station for 10 months, was charged with cyberstalking. Because the former employee is no longer in the public eye and was charged with a misdemeanor, we did not post the story. You can check out reflector.com if you'd like to see the newspaper's story.

I'm a Comm student at ECU, who just happened to finish a course on Media Ethics. With that been said i have to give a tip of the hat to WITN for reporting this story, but also not reporting on yesterday's bomb threat. I've had similar questions posed to me in tests and assignments and i'm just glad to see at least one station in this market is ethical in thier reporting.. I only hope you report to the same level if one of your employees ever should become news

Posted by: Rick Location: Washington on May 9, 2008 at 09:24 AM
If convicted he should be severly punished as he put our law enforcement officers at risk and destroyed the trust among law enforcement and the media. No excuses.

Posted by: hope Location: NC on May 9, 2008 at 08:13 AM
It's called damage control.

Posted by: Anonymous Location: New Bern on May 9, 2008 at 01:04 AM
Channel 12 had a quick story on his arrest in the 11 p.m. show. I think they are handling it well.

Posted by: Blog Refuter Location: NC on May 8, 2008 at 09:03 PM
I agree with Hope. People are naturally going to look out for their buddies, so don't let anyone in the news media and public know. And anonymous, I don't believe Scott was saying he was in agreement with the photographer's actions.

Posted by: Jim Location: Kinston on May 8, 2008 at 08:51 PM
Well, that certainly is "Coverage You Can Count On"! I wonder if he checked his facts twice before alerting his buddies?

Posted by: Anonymous Location: NC on May 8, 2008 at 08:18 PM
I totally disagree with Scott. I also understand but why put your job in jeopardy. I look at it like this, if he has any children, and was paying child support,he just made a stupid move. You may say what does this have to with it. Well, he will never to get a decent job, because most jobs now you have to sign a confidentiality agreement. By him doing this he broke his agreement. So smart Mr.News Reporter.........You've messed up now. Hope...........you said why practice this?? Okay, if the news media didn't keep us informed of things, you would be the main one crying when something happen and you didn't know. Wow, you're just as smart as the man. Are you sure you and him aren't any relation?

Posted by: Chuck Location: New Bern on May 8, 2008 at 06:17 PM
Did Ch. 12 cover this story tonight? I didn't see it.

Posted by: Tator Location: Greenville on May 8, 2008 at 05:51 PM
Anyone surprised by this? Not me!

Posted by: JimBob Location: Beulaville on May 8, 2008 at 05:37 PM
What an idiot. If this guy is convicted, he should be let go from WCTI. The News Leader has become the News Breeder!

Posted by: Mike Location: Edenton on May 8, 2008 at 04:38 PM
If convicted he should not only face the legal ramifications but should also be fired for violating the confidentiality entrusted to his employer.

Posted by: BIG J Location: SNOWHILL on May 8, 2008 at 04:13 PM
If and I say If he did that it was wrong.Anyway you look at it.So lock him up just like you would anyone else.

Posted by: hope Location: NC on May 8, 2008 at 03:46 PM
Dear Editor, Maybe this is a reason the practice should not be allowed. What a waste of everyone's time and money.

Posted by: Funny Location: NC on May 8, 2008 at 03:36 PM
"Level of Trust"....hmmm

Posted by: Kisha Location: Newport on May 8, 2008 at 03:24 PM
What an idiot. Did he honestly think no one would know he was up to something?

Posted by: scott Location: new bern on May 8, 2008 at 02:57 PM
Just another brothu looking out for another brothu and his peoples.

Posted by: hope Location: NC on May 8, 2008 at 02:16 PM
Why would the media be invited into a briefing prior to a raid? Why not just call up the club and say we are on the way.

EDITOR'S NOTE: It is not uncommon for law enforcement agencies to invite the news media along with them on major raids. There is always a level of trust between the police and the media in these situations.
