A former maintenance worker at a Greenville apartment complex has been charged with videotaping residents using a tanning bed.

Tommy Peaden is charged with 85 felony counts of secret peeping by obtaining video images without permission and another 85 counts of secret peeping by possession of those images.

Police have been overwhelmed with phone calls from potential victims since making public the discovery of a camera inside the apartment's club house. The camera was found in the attic crawl space and one videotape was recovered.

Investigators says the 85 charges are based on the number of separate pictures recovered, not the number of victims.

Peaden is in jail on a $50,000 secured bond.

Residents React

Some residents in a Greenville apartment complex are expressing feelings of shock and disgust after police say an apartment maintenance worker secretly videotaped residents as the used the complex's tanning bed facility.

Police say the secret peeping happened inside the clubhouse of the Treybrooke Apartment complex on Fifth street. According to authorities, the worker installed a camera inside a crawl space of the clubhouse and videotaped residents as they used the tanning beds between the dates of April 21 and April 29 of this year. Police say the worker was identified and swiftly terminated by Treybrooke Apartments. We spoke with apartment residents who say they are shocked by the allegations.

Police say the investigation is on-going, and multiple charges are expected to be filed in the near future. No other suspects are believed to be involved. Anyone who is believed to be a victim in this case is urged to contact the Greenville Police Department.

Original Story

There's another case of secret peeping under investigation by Greenville police.

Police say they found a video camera hidden in the attic crawl space of the clubhouse at Treybrooke Apartments.

One videotape was recovered, and contains images of people using the tanning bed between April 21th and April 29th. Police says a maintenance worker employed by the complex has been identified as a suspect, but so far no one has been charged. That employee no longer works at the apartment complex.

Treybrooke management has agreed to contact potential victims from sign-in logs to the tanning beds. People who used the tanning beds at Treybrooke can call Greenville police at 252-329-4136.

Police say multiple charges are expected to be filed in this case in the near future.

In March, a former Old Navy employee was arrested after police say he was taking photographs of women when they were in the store's dressing rooms.

The people involved, have a lot more inside information on this subject. You do not know what he has seen or not seen, as if that even matters. It is illegal to tape people without their knowledge. If you think its ok for someone to set up a camera in a private area where people are naked then you need a little counseling yourself. He was taping this as it happened, which means, he was standing basically right behind the wall as we were undressing... and watched this as he taped it. He is a nutcase!! The people at TD looked at the tape to see what was going on, they did not jump to conclusions however turned the tape over once their suspicions were verified. Get your facts straight! This a comment section and people can post their own opinions to this matter. If it was your wife, sister, mother, child I think you would feel different about this situation. This is a case of a true pervert. I do not know how you don’t see that. People’s outside images can be misleading. He should have thought of his consequences before he did something so stupid and demeaning.

Posted by: anon Location: Treybrooke on May 14, 2008 at 11:28 PM
Well I am involved! Plain and simple hes wrong. Let him tell it to the judge... I only tape people undressing i don't look at it. you have no idea who and how many are on the tape. Even if he taped one person (which he didnt) thats one to many. Again I say put yourself in our place if it was you on the tape how would you feel? Show up in court when he goes and see if you feel the same way. The bottom line is he was wrong for what he did. I've not seen where anyone has listed fifty things he's done but everyone has a point he did have the keys to the apartments If he had the bright Idea to come up with this plan whos to say what else has been done.

Posted by: Anon on May 14, 2008 at 09:22 PM
Like someone posted before me he did not even look at the tape the owner of Treybrooke did and the police did. So you should be mad at them too. I know that this is a bad situation but you still have no right to judge someone. Only a small amount of people were even on the tape the charges are for seperate images, so the same person is like 10 counts. For all of you people not even affected by this you have no right to say anything because you are not involved. And also you people think because one thing was done fifty other things were done. Why don't you stop jumping to conclusions and find something more useful to do with your time!!

Posted by: anon Location: Greenville on May 14, 2008 at 08:45 PM
This is crazy. No one has rushed to judge and the statement about being in the hot seat.Is crazy The people that this happened to did not put him there he is a grown man. All is fine you use to know him. Still does not take away from the fact of what he did. Show up in court and get the full story.

I totally understand why everyone is upset. However, I wish people would stop crucifying Mr. Peaden and let the legal system handle it. If you were in the hot seat, you would want the benefit of the doubt. He deserves nothing less. It astonishes me to no end that everyone is so quick to rush to judgment. INNOCENT UNTIL PROVEN GUILTY....DOES THAT MEAN NOTHING TO YOU PEOPLE?!!!!!!!!

I lived at Treybrook for three year's, yes he was a nice guy but he had a key that could get him in to every appartment, when you are not home how do you know that he is not going through you'r personal thing's [underwear drawers]

TO ld. greenville sound like you need to go to a support group with Tommy. 1ST OF all get your head out of the sand. What he did was wrong and you can't blame the people on this site for being upset. We have alot of people walking around in this world that seem really nice but they have problems. And Tommy is one of them he needs some help and if you are a family member or a friend then you should not want this to be brushed under the rug but work to see that he get some kind of help. Just because he act nice does not make him a fine person. hes a pervert and just because he's not walking around with a sign around his neck saying I film people dressing & undressing does not make him a fine person push him to get help if you want to help him, dont take up for what he's done.

Posted by: Ex Treybrooke Location: Greenville on May 14, 2008 at 10:09 AM
I lived in Treybrooke for a time when moving to Greenville. Met Tommy, was an incredibly nice person and always enjoyed conversations with him. Was shocked to see he was behind this. I hope he can learn his lesson and still move on with his life as I always found him to be a nice guy

Posted by: l.d. Location: greenville on May 14, 2008 at 09:21 AM
to anon he did not have any prior ti ckets. liar! he is a very good man and not a sicko. he made a bad mistake and will pay for it, nobodys apartment was taped, it was aone time incodent and he did not even look at the tape. the police looked at it .he did not view any of the residents.he doesnt know what or who was on there.

Posted by: L Location: Treybrooke on May 14, 2008 at 08:58 AM
Wow. I must say there is a huge difference beteen someone watching me bend over by the poolside, and then someone video taping me unknowingly. When you are in public and bend over or prance around in a bathing suit poolside you know you have the chance of someone checking you out. I personally am a victim of this crime on 4 separate occasions and I am pretty upset. Tommy is a nice guy and I knew him well living here for 3 years now but am still upset and offended that this happened to me.

Posted by: anonymous Location: Treybrooke on May 13, 2008 at 09:17 PM
I'm sorry but if you don't see the difference in someone looking at someone at the pool and someone setting up a camera and taking pictures of people dressing and undressing and them not knowing you have a problem & then we have someone else saying just because he does one thing wrong does not make him a bad person you can say what you want he is sick and a pervert. Just because he was nice to you does not make him a good person. If it walks like a duck sounds like a duck must be a duck. This really hurts what has happened to us and what else might come out of this then we have people making smart remarks. if it was you or your daughter that this had happened to you would see it in a different light. I've not seen where anyone has said anything about judging this man so maybe you need to think before you speak remarks like this does not help have a little feeling for the people this happened to.

Posted by: anon on May 13, 2008 at 08:39 PM
Yes I am sure people look at others around the poolside... whatever else ridiculous you said. However, hiding tapes in tanning beds unknowing to tenants that are naked is WRONG!!!! No matter what you say, that crosses the line. I do believe people can make mistakes and I too thought of Mr. Peaden as a good man. However, you must pay for your mistakes and you can't always judge a book by its cover.

Posted by: Anon on May 13, 2008 at 06:03 PM
All of you need to just calm down. You are accusing someone and making a huge deal out of something that you don't even know the facts about. And furthermore there is not one man in the world who has not looked at a woman bending over or walking around at the pool so don't try to act like your so innocent and for that I call you perverts. Everyone makes mistakes. And also who are you to judge someone else? Just because a person does one thing wrong doesn't make them a bad person so you people need to think before you speak. You don't know the half of what is going on so you should just keep your mouths shut until you know the facts!

Posted by: E. Nichols Location: Greenville, NC on May 13, 2008 at 05:19 PM
I think everyone needs to remember that those accused of crimes are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law...not the court of public opinion. That being said, I lived at Treybrooke from 1994 - 2003 and found Mr. Peaden to be very helpful and kind. Guilty or not, I knew him to be a good person.

Posted by: anon on May 13, 2008 at 05:16 PM
before this he had three minor traffic violations

Posted by: Katie Location: Greenville, NC on May 13, 2008 at 01:44 PM
First and foremost, I would like to tell the victims that I cannot fathom having to deal with this situation because of some pervert's voyeurism and for that, I am truly sorry for you. Secondly, I agree with those who comment on making sure the accused stays accused and not Treybrooke Apartments. Background checking of employees should be essential for hiring help at these places; however, what is there to check if someone doesn't already have a prior record of voyeurism or God knows what else? That's not to say this guy didn't have a previous record, I did not check. I do wish Treybrooke had of been a bit more compassionate towards its tenants/victims of this situation instead of pawning it off on Greenville PD; however, TB may have decided to do this for legal purposes. I am sure there are many other factors that we are not taking into consideration because we cannot be made aware of them at this time. With all that said, victims, you'll make it through this!! Stay strong!

Posted by: mother of a person on tape Location: greenville on May 13, 2008 at 10:14 AM
i agree with miranda. give treybrooke a break. they turned everything over to the gpd asap and they are following the advice of gpd during the investigation. dont you think treybrooke is just as upset as we are about this whole thing? i truly feel my daughter is just as safe living at treybrooke as anywhere else in greenville.

Posted by: concerned Location: eastern nc on May 12, 2008 at 10:32 PM
My first question to the managment at this apartment complex would be; what process do you do your hiring? There is not a lot of companies out there that does background checks and without them you do not know anything about the person. If I was to call one of your former employers for a reference on you, they can not tell me if you were fired, they can tell me if you are rehireable or not by their company, but can not give me a reason for you not being rehireable. If I was one of the people living the complex you can bet I would sitting in an attorney's office.

Posted by: anonymous on May 12, 2008 at 07:37 PM
What I am most concerned and upset about is the fact that the management team has done nothing to reassure their tenants. I agree the management may not have ever expected this to happen nor could have predicted this, however they are doing nothing to comfort the residents that live here. This not only impacted the persons on the tape, but the entire community. I was on the tape and was contacted by treybrooke. I feel they should have gathered us together or sent a newsletter to every tenant that lives here before the media was introduced into this. We shoud be reassured of our safety! They SHOULD have explained the measures they will take to make sure this does not happen again, but what have they done NOTHING! This is a nice place to live and I wish we as a community could come togehter to prevent this from happening again. I enjoy the people here, but I must say this has taken me by surprise and I have major trust issues at this time. We need answers treybrooke.

Posted by: Anonymous Location: NC on May 12, 2008 at 05:53 PM
I live in an apartment complex myself. Not in Treybrooke......this can happen in any complex. I understand everyone is upset, I would be if it was me this happen to. Things happen and it seems you're faulting the property management for this. Why fault them. If they hired this person for maintence, he could of had a good background. You never know what might of trigger him to do something like this. Or maybe he could have done this before and never got caught. Sometimes things go on for a while and nobody knows, eventually the person will get caught. I also see why you fault them if it took a few days for the tenants to find out then maybe they knew something. Who is really at fault.........As I said in the beginning I live in apartment complex and I've been here for 5 1/2 years, this is really scary.

Comment Edited.

All this worrying, theories and maybe they did stuff does no good b/c none of it os backed up w/ any facts from the Greenville PD. Why don't we all wait on the facts to be released before we cause hysteria!? This is all over supposed stuff that may be true but hasn't been even proved or investigated yet...

Posted by: Annonymous 2 Location: Treybrooke on May 12, 2008 at 03:32 PM
This is for Miranda my daughter is on the tapes. Maintenance has a key to everyones apartment and can come and go as they please. Each room in your apartment has a vent the covers on these vent can be removed I'm not saying they have but it is something to think about and check out. and we dont know if this is the 1st time this has happened. How long has this maintenance worker worked at Treybrooke?

Posted by: Miranda Location: Treybrooke on May 12, 2008 at 02:40 PM
Okay people...I live at Treybrooke and am most likely one of the one's on the tape (still waiting on Greenville PD) and there is no way that the maintenance guy put cameras in our apartments. We don't have attics and he can't get into the air vents, etc. and even if he did, how would he go back and get the tapes without us knowing about it? Be reasonable. I have lived at Treybrooke for three years and this is the first time that anything like this has happened. I knew this guy and he was in my apartment all the time, but I am not worried that my apartment is being spied on. So stop worrying about the apartments being bugged and realize that it was just the tanning beds because that was the place that he could access all the time so it's the only place that it would make sense to put his camera for his perversion...

Posted by: GvillePropMgr Location: Greenville on May 12, 2008 at 10:15 AM
I also believe, along with several other people on here, people should focus on the man hiding the camera and not Treybrooke. Anyone that knows anything about the hiring process involved in regular maintenance employees, knows there would be no way to determine whether you're hiring someone that could potentially do something like this in the future. Life involves a balance of fortunate and unfortunate events that nobody can help. Channeling anger into the wrong target simply b/c someone needs to get out resentment is never an amicable thing to do in any situation no matter how extreme. I hope the ACTUAL criminal that did the videotaping doesn't get lost in the cracks amidst all this energy being spent on going after the institution, not the actual criminal.

I have a couple of questions 1st how did WITN learn about the camera that was found? Is WITN staying in contact with Greenville PD so everyone can be kept updated? WE really have our doubts that this was the 1st time this worker set up a camera

Posted by: Mom Location: ? on May 10, 2008 at 10:46 AM
I'm the mother of one of the girls on the tape. We checked Treybrooke out to make sure it was safe for our daughter to live there. Now she does not want to live there any more now we have to find somewhere else to live plus the cost Treybrooke should pay for this cost of this

Posted by: Rebecca Location: Treybrooke on May 10, 2008 at 05:39 AM
Hearing about this new, makes me wonder if other/or new workers would try to hide camera in the apartments. what is preventing this behavior from happening? It was reported that the police founds these camera in the clubhouse. Is the police going to look in each apartment? No! So how would a vitim be aware if she or he is being watch in their own homes? The whole leaves questions about the protection of a resident privacy that all I'm saying.

Posted by: Miranda Location: Treybrooke on May 9, 2008 at 02:35 PM
I agree that it's not the management's fault, but I just found out about this today and I use that tanning bed. I have never signed a log book to use the tanning bed, so there are probably more people that don't sign it and if we weren't on the list, they didn't call us. I think that instead of finding out by a friend, Treybrooke employees should have tried to get the word out better. They should at least pull all of us together an appologize instead of saying "We turned everything over to the police so call them."

Posted by: concerned resident on May 9, 2008 at 01:49 PM
Taken from Daily Reflector: "On April 30, Treybrooke MANAGEMENT TOLD POLICE that someone was videotaping residents who used the clubhouse tanning bed. TREYBROOKE EMPLOYEES FOUND a video camera and one videotape in the attic crawl space containing images of people using the tanning bed from April 21-29, Bartlett said." I agree with the last post and I am also a victim, but Treybrooke is not to blame. They ARE taking proper responsibility, by turning in the video and terminating the employee. What else do you expect them to do? I am upset as all of you but everyone should focus their anger on the worker responsible and not the staff in general.

Posted by: Anonymous Location: Greenville NC on May 9, 2008 at 12:44 PM
Why is everyone blaming the management. Management has taken the proper procedures of firing the maintance person, and contacting as best they can the people/persons they may have been involved. The treybrooke staff is under the direction of Greenville Police Dept. People should stop blaming them Has anyone ever thought of the idea that those persons/people use the tanning facalities too. Do you feel they are not upset or feel victimized. They can only do what GPD tells them in order to build a sufficient case to properly have justice serverd. So therefore in closing in your going to make comments put the heat on GPD. Thank you to treybrooke staff/management for removing the individual and cooperating with greenville pd to build a strong case so justice can be served.

I'm sure most of the people in this apartment complex are college students. As a Mother of a college girl this is very upsetting. I smell a law suit for sure.

I JUST MOVED HERE AND I AM MOVING OUT RIGHT AWAY. THE MANAGER AND HIS EMPLOYEES ARE PLAYING THIS THING OFF LIKE THEY ARE HIDING SOMETHING. THEY SAY "ITS NOT OUR FAULT" AND "HE DOSENT WORK HERE ANYMORE" BUT WHO CARES? THE DAMAGE HAS BEEN DONE... WHO ELSE WAS INVOLVED? I DONT NUDE PHOTOS AND VIDEOS OF MYSELF POSTED ON YOUTUBE. MY PRIVACY HAS BEEN VIOLATED... I AM ONE OF THE ONES ACUTALLY ON THE TAPE. I AM SEEING RESTITUTION FROM TREYBROOKE. I HAVE CURRENTLY SEEKING LEGAL ADVISE... ANYONE ELSE CARE TO JOIN??

Posted by: Anonymous on May 8, 2008 at 08:39 PM
We are blaming the Management because they are not taking any responsibility on this issue! Again, it happened by THEIR employee in THEIR building in a room where we expected privacy! How long was this going on? No one really knows. I can honestly say that I do not feel safe at all here at Treybrooke. They make it seem all cosy with the security guard patroling and the cameras monitoring the complex but the entire time the crimes were being commited on the inside. I cant believe that I pay to live here... I just signed my lease here and I am going to break it and get out of here as soon as possible.

Posted by: Bob on May 8, 2008 at 07:45 PM
Why are people automatically blaming the management. Have any of you thought that the police told them to be quiet? Think of all the scenerio's out there!!

Posted by: Caught on tape Location: AT TREYBROOKE on May 8, 2008 at 07:40 PM
I SAY THEY SHOULD AT LEAST GET EVERYONE TOGETHER AND INFORM ALL OF US ABOUT WHAT IS GOING ON. NO ONE KNOWS ANYTHING AT THIS POINT AND THE GREENVILLE POLICE DEPARTMENT DETECTIVE ISN'T RETURNING ANYONE'S CALLS. SHE MUST BE OUT WRITING TRAFFIC TICKETS. SHOCKING! THIS IS A CASE WHERE WE REALLY NEED THE POLICE AND THEY ARE NOT RESPONDING. WHAT IS WRONG WITH THIS PICTURE?

Posted by: Anon on May 8, 2008 at 03:24 PM
Has anyone thought about the possibility that it's someone in management and that the guy blamed is just a scapegoat? It seems really fishy to me the way things are being handled.

Posted by: anonymous on May 8, 2008 at 03:12 PM
It sound to me like this may be a cover-up by Treybrooke. I don't think anyone would have found out about this secret video taping had the news not been broken on tv. i suggest to everyone involved that you guys ban together and seek some type of lawsuit against the idiot that did this and the apts. themselves. It seems to me that they are handling this very unprofessionaly and that they are just trying to cover themselves. I'm also sure that they have acquired legal counsel on this situation. The whole think just seems very fishy.

Posted by: MLF Location: Greenville on May 8, 2008 at 02:45 PM
Who is to say if it was never leaked to media would we have found out? What are they trying to hide? I can't get a returned call from Greenville PD. None of us were contacted until after the fact. We all have questions and no one is around with the answers!!

Posted by: Anonymous also Location: Treybrooke on May 8, 2008 at 02:41 PM
True, I am one of the few guy affected by this. No one is saying anything about how long it could have been going on. Treybrooke Management is being very careful about what they are saying which leads me to believe they have something else to hide. I mean at this point we don't know if the tapes were for personal use or if they were being sold or anything else for that matter. Folks, we have to get legal advice. The more time that passes the more upset I become. We all went in there with the expectation of our privacy being protected and I feel so violated and even more hurt that we all had to find out after the fact through the media. We need to all get together and discuss what we should do.

Posted by: Concern citizen Location: Greenville on May 8, 2008 at 02:29 PM
I live in a complex. How can I tell if my fire alarm has a camera in it? Sometimes it sounds like a camera snapping pictures.

Posted by: Anonymous Location: Treybrooke Apts on May 8, 2008 at 01:00 PM
It's not only women... I live at Treybrooke and I herd that even men were videotaped! So who knows what this sicko was looking for, men or women?! What if this guy went through our personal items when he was in our homes fixing things? The mangement needs to hire professionals (not employed by treybrooke!) to check all of the apartments for cameras and other types of equipment this guy could have used. Also they need to change all of the locks because he could have made copies of keys, master keys, etc.

Posted by: Pirate65 Location: Greenville on May 8, 2008 at 10:08 AM
Women need to wake up and realize that to a majority of men, we are nothing but sexual objects to them.. even the ones that seem the nicest. Women need to take charge of their lives, stop dressing skimpy, stop anything that promotes these predators. Women are not safe as long as there are men around. That's just a fact.

Posted by: greenville woman Location: Greenville on May 8, 2008 at 09:40 AM
this is horrible. What in the world are we going to do? We aren't safe anywhere. What if he was going into apartments when people weren't home and puting cameras in. For the people that live there you need to have your apartments checked. Thats scary. I feel for all of you that were video taped. I know how it feels.

Posted by: Michelle Location: Greenville on May 8, 2008 at 08:25 AM
I can't decide if this is sad or disguisting. I knew this guy decently well as I have lived at TreyBrooke for 3 years and he seemed the nicest. And as someone posted before, how do we know our places aren't or haven't been under surveillance? He knew so much about everyone; I thought he was just on top of his job. Makes you wonder.... I too am upset that I first found out about this through an E-mail from a concerned friend who doesn't even LIVE at Treybrooke!

Posted by: Anonymous Location: Treybrooke on May 8, 2008 at 06:44 AM
The tanning beds have been closed for over a week. We all were wondering why they have been closed... the apartment complex knew about this the entire time and told no one! WHY?!?! It was not until the media got a hold of this is when we were called and told about it. However, it was already too late. I cant believe that they knew about this for over a week and said nothing to us who were on the list. Anyone else who was on the list please post here... we all need to get together and seek legal advise together against the Apartment complex.

I am a resident at Treybrooke and I am disgusted with this! I dont even want to live here anymore! Who is to know if this guy who fixes our toilet and leaky sinks didnt video tape us in our homes?? The Treybrooke management is handling this thing very unprofessionally. They are taking absoloutly no responsibility... I mean it happened in THEIR building by THEIR employee! Not only that... I found out by reading this in the paper this morning. The management should have contacted us before it wound up in the papers and on TV. If you live in Treybrooke please stand up and complain. This guy could have been in your home while you were at work!! It's just creepy and disgusting.
