  • Costs pinch food stamp recipients

The market doors open at midnight on the first of each month for the express purpose of letting her and a dozen or so others to start shopping the instant they have access to the new month's allotment of food stamps. This is what the soaring cost of food looks like at street level: Poor people whose food stamps don't buy as much as they once did rushing into a store in the dead of night on the first day of the month.

The Internal Revenue Service says it will start directly depositing economic stimulus checks Monday. Checks will be mailed out beginning in early May.

Click here to see the update schedule for economic stimulus payments.

You cannot get an economic stimulus check, the IRS says, unless you file a 2007 tax return. 130 million household are eligible for the checks. Many individuals can expect a $600, while married couples receive $1,200. Parents may receive an additional $300 for each child.

You can calculate how much you will likely receive by clicking here.

The IRS says you will get your stimulus check by direct deposit if that is what you checked for your tax refund when you filed your tax return. If you did not check the box for direct deposit, the IRS will mail you a check.

I wanted to share this with every one that has been asking about confirmation about the fees and how they affected your stimulus. This was sent to me by Turbo Tax themselves. We want to provide you with the most up–to–date information about the tax rebate to which you may be entitled. Recently, you may have received a letter from the IRS advising you when to expect your Economic Stimulus Payment (rebate). That IRS letter may have inadvertently left off some important information. Taxpayers who chose to have their tax preparation fees deducted from their federal tax refund will receive their tax rebate in the mail, not via direct deposit.I hope you find this information helpful. If you still have questions, the best source for the most up-to-date information is www.irs.gov (see the "Rebate Payment Questions" link).

Its' was on the news this morning that allots of people rebate check was short, and that will get more money in July.

So, if i filed turbo tax and had my fees taken out of my check and i am married with 2 children, i wont be receiving $1,800 and i will be receiving a paper check? what amount will i receive!

Posted by: Ben on May 16, 2008 at 10:33 AM
Wow there are a lot of whinners here. But I can understand I was expecting $600 and why not the news says all tax paying adults get $600 but nope this AM looked at my account and only got $300. What a rip off. Now I can't pay my bills. As I had to float someone else last week since I knew I was getting my stimuls check today (for an expected $600) but nope didn't happen. SO the governement screws us all again. Gee G. Bush your family gets' rich and ther rest of us suffer. Republicans suck. I'm sure the governement has heard the complaints. WHy offer a stimulas if your going to not really give it to those who are the working poor? So GW don't expect any real improvement. I don't even make enough to pay for my student loans so how does that help me.

This is the first time I have been on this site, and it was to find out why we didn't get a check. I can't believe the comments that are posted on here! Some of you people are out of your minds!!! I need the money, and no I haven't spent it yet, BUT if I had it would have been either on food, or a house payment. Due to the fact that because of our lousy government my husband has lost his job - because the company could no longer continue, because of the state of our economy. How dare anyone say I am splurging - I do work, we have a nine year old, and are just trying to make sure our bills get paid, so we don't loose our house as so many others have. When we bought our house 7 years ago we made over twice the amount of money that we make now!! Thanks to all of you who are accusing me of not doing what I have to do - it sucks that you feel like anyone who needs their check should just wait on it to come. Oh and by the way we THOUGHT we were getting $1500, instead it will be $900. Nice Huh

It is pretty obvious that it is much easier to be rude and judgemental when you are "advising" your fellow countrymen from behind a keyboard. That said, don't spend money you don't have yet. However, being disappointed at not receiving what you have been promised is not a character flaw. It is misleading that it wasn't made clear that tax prep fees would affect the disbursement of this money. Why would you expect anything less? The last 8 years have been full of glazed over facts and misleading news. Rest assured those who are due will get it in July (something to look forward too when everyone elses is spent and gone) and only 249 days left until Bush & Co. are out of office! God help us!! =)

all you people out there that say just wait on your check you'll get it stop complaning about the money you will get it. And for everyone who says don't blame the IRS... read this and then decide what you think. Maybe you already got your check and who cares about the rest of us who didn't. But what if your check got sent to someone elses bank account??? Would you still feel the same way? Our government and IRS has gone to H*ll!!!!! Im sure you will all like this article. http://money.aol.com/news/articles/_a/irs-hunts-for-errant-tax-rebates/20080515200009990001

If some of you would take the time to do a little RESEARCH of your own you could figure out when and how you are getting your check, nearly every question has been answered below, and people still ask the same questions over and over! Geez, I think they should attach an intelligence test to this rebate, some of you wouldn't get a penny!

Posted by: Tina Location: Minnesota on May 15, 2008 at 05:03 PM
Thank you J.D. that helps a lot. and it explaines everything.

Posted by: JD Location: New Bern on May 15, 2008 at 04:13 PM
Just a little fyi...if you filed your taxes through turbo tax, they are sending out emails to let everyone know how they will be receiving their rebate. I just got an email today from turbo tax, and since I had my preparation fees withheld from my tax refund, I will be receiving a paper check. I hope this helps some people.

Hi Eric, I respect your oppinion, but I see it this way. If the government hadn't screwed up the economy so badly, they wouldn't need to send out the money in the first place. Also I just so happens that when we had our last child, we both had really good jobs, and were making great money. I think that the way the ecconomy got so messed up, made people lose jobs, overopulation. All of the illeagal imagrants that were abel to slip accross the border and take our jobs, getting benifits from our tax mney. You know, the money that we pay out of our pay checks. I feel that they messed up, and now they are trying to fix it. I just don't really think that it will work. If the ecconomy of the united astates wasn't so messed up in the first place. People wouldnt have gotten laid off and forced to take lesser paying jobs. Like I say. I respect your oppinion, but its not all black and white, like you make it out to be.

I think that someone in public office should try to help with the gas prices. That is really putting a strain on American families and is why we really need this in the first place. We need to elect someone in office who will help us and stop all of these oil companies from getting richer when we can't even afford to fill up. Even if gas prices go down, the cost of milk, eggs and everything else won't go down.

Posted by: Eric Location: Alabama on May 15, 2008 at 12:02 PM
I agree totally with CHAD. Sorry, bad things have happened to people and all, but you didn't have a stimulus check in the past years and your still breathing. It's just pure greed. Yes, I am expecting one but, its money I don't have now & whenever it get here is fine with me. And as far as the large families of 6 or whatever, quit procreating!! It's not everyone elses fault you decided to have large families & now things are getting a little tough. I'm am just sick of how spoiled everyone is acting about "where's my money?" If you ask me you don't deserve a thing!!!!

I recieved my check tues, just as they said I would on irs's website, irs.gov. I used turbotax to do my taxes, but paided the fees myself and get them through direct deposit. it was all correct

Posted by: crystal Location: washington on May 14, 2008 at 11:25 PM
reset your credit, are you serious? if you couldnt keep it straight then how can you now? especially if your depending on this stimulus check to pay your car off instead of your paycheck

Comment Edited.

My question is about the fees taken out...Does anyone know when we could expect the money? Will it still be direct deposited(if that's the way I had it done to start with) or will it come in a paper check? Anyone that knows where I can find that information out, please let me know. Thanks...

Posted by: Nicole Location: Las Vegas on May 14, 2008 at 02:03 PM
I was supposed to get my check direct deposit on the 9th now thanks to reading posts I see why I didn't get it.I had my fees taken out of my refund. The IRS should have told people about this new information. Thank you. I also noticed a lot of people havening trouble with insurance because of the cost for medical and prescription. I know of a site that might be able to help. www.mybenefitsplus.com/bncurry. Its not insurance its just discount benefits and I love it. I don't have to wait for an ok to get anything done. I have medical, dental, prescription and other stuff. Its cool. I had to get work done on my teeth root canals joy $1800 I am broke but had to do it. Showed my Ameriplan card I paid $700 still broke but not as much. Any way sorry to ramble thanks to all for the stimulus info and hope the site I gave can help some people like it did me. Bless all.

Well said Sarah, As for Chad, Well not all of us that work, have jobs that pay enough to suport a family of 6. Some people may have had great jobs, but got laid off. Don't even tell me that we don't work. I happent to work overnights, Im going to collage, and the rest of the time, Im taking care of 2 preschoolers. Wheres the time for rest? you do the math. Dont you ever put down anyone untill youve been in their place. I hope for your sake that you never are. Get off of your high horse. There are people who ARE DEPENDING on this money, just to get a little ahead, or to stay afloat. I agree with Sarah. If our government can take all of our money to take care of all of these people in forign countries, Why shouldnt they use some of it to take care of people right in our own backyards? I dont want to hear the welfare speal either. this money is for the working people who pay taxes. Not all working class are on easy street. Im happy for those of you that are. Just dont put the rest down.

If Americans and the government could live and work within their means, we wouldn't be in this situation. Like a charity handout is going to solve our problems! I can't believe other nations actually give us money. They should know they will never get it back.

I think that this is just a way to try to but a bandaid on all the bull thats been goimg on, im glad we are going to get some thing but it should be more, we really need alot more , with gas at a all time high, and even electricity, we are in for a real culture shock. I think we should be really carefull where we spend our checks, and make sure that we are really boosting the right economy. maybe we can by our president a new brain!!!l.o.l

Posted by: Sarah Location: VA on May 14, 2008 at 09:52 AM
I have seen several people tell everyone to stop complaining because it's free money. In case you aren't aware, it isn't free money, we borrowed it from China and most of us will by goods made in China so which economy is it stimulating again??...That being said, I still want my check because that is the only way I can afford to go on vacation this year! :)

This whole stimulus check is a bunch of crap. Instead of getting $600, I got $455. Even though I made enough and paid enough in, I am screwed by the gov yet again.

Posted by: Linda Location: NC on May 14, 2008 at 09:19 AM
Chad,I hope nothing every happens to you, but life can change real quick. One day I was healthy and working (and a single mother not getting child support). Had a heart attack and now can't even feed my child. Yes, I am impatiently waiting for that check......

i had my tax check and my payroll checks dd, because the neighborhood i live in is getting bad, so why would they think that this check they are sending me now i would want done any differently ? Who do i call if for some reason it doesn't get to me, and how late should i wait?

Posted by: m Location: eastern nc on May 14, 2008 at 06:58 AM
ashley: check your grandparents' account. whatever number is used when you originally filed is the same one the irs will use.

Posted by: m Location: eastern nc on May 14, 2008 at 06:57 AM
I should have stated more in my previous post. We filed in Feb by direct deposit. The last two of the SSN is 27. We got our $2100 stimulus check on time by direct deposit on May 9. I hope this gives a little hope to those waiting.

Posted by: Kris Location: California on May 14, 2008 at 04:10 AM
You know, if you think about it the reason the DD for the stimulus not working makes sense. The IRS was sent information on two different banks; your bank and your tax persons bank. Even though you figure they should know your bank by your name, that is a lot of people they would have to go through to distinguish between the two. So the easy answer is to just send a check. Lazy, true. Sucks, I know. But that is the IRS. Easy for them, hard on us.

Posted by: chad Location: usa on May 13, 2008 at 10:48 PM
why r u all complaining about the checks like most of u have posted in here cant ya wait for it to arrive or what thats why thye have things called jobs and saving accounts now what would u ppl do if we wasnt gonna get a check u woould have to survive then but now we r suppose to be getting these checks and lots of ppl r just complaining about it... be happpy we r getting one and stop being so upset...

Slight Edit

I am amazed at the people in this country. Just sad to say the least. No wonder we are in the state we are in and on the decline. You ALL make me sick.

Posted by: Tina Location: Minnesota on May 13, 2008 at 05:57 PM
Of course people are going to count on having some extra cash when the government is promising it to them. Its only human to think about what you would do with some extra money. Im sure all of you nay sayers have done it too. AND BE HONEST. it may not have been this time but.... youve done it too. I also really dont think its fair if some people are getting it but not the rest of us.

Hi Linda I really hope you get yours soon. Its really hard just to be healthy. Insurence costs so much. A lot of employers take it out of your checks, its can be almost half of your pay. I dont think that one should have to be rich to stay healthy. best of luck to you and your son.

I have read many of your comments and have not encountered one like this... I got my stimulus "check" direct deposited right on time... I am married and filed jointly. We made enough... But we got $953. what's up with that??? I could understand $600, or maybe $900... But $953??? How did they come up with that? We were supposed to get $1200!

Posted by: linda Location: RR NC on May 13, 2008 at 12:30 PM
I was expecting mine the first week (My ss # ends in 01. I recently had a heart attack and I have no insurance. I spend more then $300 a month in prescription meds alone. I was expecting that money two weeks ago, otherwise I would have only gotten 2 weeks of meds. Now my son and I are living off oddles of noodles and grill cheese till I get my next check next week!!!!

Posted by: Tina Location: Minnesota on May 13, 2008 at 11:31 AM
Still waiting for mine. I really need it right now, and not because we have already spnt it, but because we are broke. we are useing our to pay off our car. That will help our credit a little. By the way, I don't really understand a lot about these issues and stuff, but I think that rather than sending us the money, hy dont they reset our credit instead. people with good or excelent credit, should keep their credit. People that have poor credit, should just start over. I think if credit bebt was eliminated, then people would be able to spend more. and thats what they want. I think now, the way it is, people are just going to use the money to pay off their debts. Thats not going to help the economy the way they want it to. At least not right away. As I said, Im far from an expert on this subject. Im just wondering. I know that if we had good credit, We could buy a house. It would save us rent money we would spend the same amount on a house payment. It would also help the real estate.

Yes i have experienced it too I was supposed to get it on may 9th also and it is not here yet either i did my taxes online e file and direct deposit back the first week in feb and still haven't got mine. don't bother calling they are too busy

got our stimulus check friday may 9.

Posted by: jan Location: nc on May 13, 2008 at 10:26 AM
Good Gracious, I guess everyone would really flip out if they decided not to send them out at all. All of you who are spending money on the basis that you will be getting money is crazy. That is absolutely absurd. you cannot depend on something that you have no control over. This country is in such a mess they might decide not to send it out at all. anything could happen, if you get one be happy and if you don't you still have no losses. What the government should have done was just send them out and then say what it was for then everyone wouldn't be expecting it. Everyone of you are acting like children. You simply don't count on something you have no control over.

My last two digits is 42. I did electronic filing with direct deposit. I was supposed to get my deposit on the 9th. NOT THERE YET! Has anyone else experienced this?

Posted by: Taxpayer Location: North Carolina on May 13, 2008 at 09:08 AM
I'm curious to know what some of you are going to do after you get this refund check????? It's hard to believe that some of you are actually calling for $300-$600 dollars. If you stop calling them, maybe you will get the check sooner. They're probably busy answering the phones.

Posted by: Confused in Carolina Location: Ayden on May 12, 2008 at 11:46 PM
The government wants us to go out and spend, spend, spend that rebate check, but money managers tells us the smart thing to do is invest it or put it in a money CD. Many really need to pay off some debt and will no doubt put at least half on that instead. Good for them.

Posted by: Misinformed Location: somewhere USA on May 12, 2008 at 11:14 PM
Hmmm IRS and direct deposit is so misleading. They have failed to mention that if you had your taxes done by a Tax preparer and direct deposited from them that you will receive a paper check instead of direct deposit. Isn't that so nice of our government people to keep us informed. Well thank you anyways Uncle Sam for the free money.

Posted by: Jesse Location: Greenville on May 12, 2008 at 04:35 PM
Yeah well, this is the kind of person that won't be happy no matter what so good luck trying to please everyone...I've always operated under the old saying, "if you're aiming to please everyone, you will always fail." Clearly, nobody can please the guy below. Nevermind, its free money...he would rather argue about them not getting it to him in time on his schedule. They could have probably kept it and not ever given it back to us. By the way, the IRS isn't who makes the ultimate decision to put this money back into the economy. The decision comes from multiple politicians, gov't departments and people that constantly get bashed on here like our most unpopular president. The IRS does the groundwork from there after the package is signed by the president. Just the processes mentioned (which I'm sure I've missed a ton of them) take an extreme amount of time, organization and money spent to even coordinate getting these payments out to U.S. citizens. So excuse them for taking a while

Posted by: Kathy Location: New Jersey on May 12, 2008 at 04:32 PM
Thanks, ZC - eventually being the key word. To others, this is not the same as the previous rebate - we will not have to claim it as income next year. (Keep in mind, it is a one time rebate, however it is for 2008 but they used 2007 numbers to determine who is eliglble. If your 2007 numbers made you ineligible, but you are eligible based on 2008 numbers, you can claim the rebate next year.) This still does not help me, however. I am the tax accountant who should have gotten a direct deposit last week and did not. Yes, the majority of people, including most of my clients, have gotten the rebate according to schedule. But some of us have not, and the IRS does not seem to know why. You can check the IRS website (www.irs.gov) to access information on your rebate, but that did not help me. And being on hold with the IRS for 40 minutes, then just being told that they "think" I will get a check at the end of June did nothing for my confidence in the system. Thanks "Dubya".

Posted by: Angry guy Location: Socal on May 12, 2008 at 02:59 PM
I think this whole rebate schedule is just a way for the irs to make us spend more than we actually have. They hype people up and say it is coming earlier than expected, when it is really coming later than expected. My rebate went from may2nd to june 20th. I dont know why they dont have DD information when it is printed right on the tax returns. I think those IRS people are probably sleeping on our tax forms right now. thanks alot IRS for using our money and taking your time to give it back!

Posted by: Zc Location: Indy on May 12, 2008 at 01:58 PM
You will not have to claim this money, if you receive any, on your taxes next year according the governement. You also will not be deducted you retrun on your 2008 taxes. There are tons of stipulations on why some people are getting direct depsoit or not, and the amount you are going to get. Sit down, shut up, and wait for your money. If you meet all the requirements, you will get something eventually.

from what i heard the check was running 4 days ahead of what they were supposed to the go in the order of the last two numbers of your social security mine are 89 i should get mine direct deposit on the 16th the last pay out. i am only hope to get the 300 if i get 600 good! but no one should depend on this money coming dont count your chickens before they hatch. The only reason the gov is doing this is to hopefully stop a resession which is def just going to cause inflation if your smart you will save the money the gov is trying to circulate more money through the economy. as back in the day they used to have to have Gold to back up the money which is not the case anymore i wouldnt be surprised if we had a a depression.

the money is not free. that was a lesson a few years back with these same checks. i have learned that absolutely nothing is free. people just tell you that. its sad how folks work there butts off, pay taxes on everything and still have to pay for getting your own money. two parent families get 1200 or more single family 600. sad, sad, sad

If you used Turbo Tax for Direct Deposit check out this link http://turbotax.intuit.com/support/kb/tax-content/tax-tips/6255.html SBB&T deposits will be mailed not deposited.

filed with turbo tax and eiligle for $1200.00 by direct deposit. My last two digits are 21. Still no money. I see this is also happening to other people who have left comments here also. I don't need this money, but if your Government tells you something, why shouldn't you expect it?

Posted by: Justin Location: Virginia on May 12, 2008 at 11:41 AM
The IRS lies. I got 500 less than I expected, and no one can give me a clear reason why. I don't owe the IRS any money, I haven't missed a Student Loan payment. My wife and I don't make too much or too little combined income. ANd my Payment was lowered. Now, I cant get that Giant TV

As mentioned before, don't count on this money. If you spend it before you get it, them you don't get it, you're stuck. A girl I work with thought she would get a check. She went out and spent a bunch of money. I tried to warn people NOT to look for anything. A lot of people are getting their feelings hurt, b/c they aren't getting the money. Next year when you file your 2008 taxes, you'll have to claim the money you get. It's NOT free.

For all of you who are trying to contact someone at IRS, you can call 1-800829-1040 then press (2) for questions about your refund, payment, or account, then press (3) for questions about your tax rebate. You will be put on hold till the next available rep. Good luck.

I can't believe how many people are crying and whining about not receiving their check yet. Come on people, this is basically a supplemental gift from the government. If you already have your check "spent" before it has even arrived then you plenty of other issues. The best bet is to go on as you were and when it comes it comes, get a grip...seriously.

My husband and I opted to get our tax refund directed deposited, so we thought the stimulus payment would happen the same way..NOT! We were supposed to get the stimulus payment May 9, but its not there! Called the IRS number and they guestimated us getting ours by CHECK late JUNE.. What's up with that?? I'm expecting a baby in JUNE, I needed that money for furniture and other things!! Don't know what I'm going to do now... If the IRS puts down a schedule, they need to stick to it!! I was really hoping for that money this week.

My SSN ends in 34 and today is May 10th (now 1233a) - no deposit and the stimulus schedule online has no info - do I call the IRS?

Posted by: ShiftWorker Location: Vanceboro on May 10, 2008 at 12:03 AM
Well, just for everyones info. I got my refund today, me and my husband, and got back 1,200 a week earlier that the schedule said. Automatic draft of course, as that's how we filed originally. My son also got his back today, single, and didn't make all that much, got $600.00. he also filed electronically. His girl friend did the H & R block credit card thing, and she will get her's back in the form of a paper check.

I think it is wrong that we have to wait so long for a small amount of money and the gas prices are still rising. I think we should get our stimulius check the same time the people who got direct deposit did. It's not like it's a million dollars or something.

Hate to tell ya, but most health insurance through any type of company, is pretty useless now. Unless you want to go spend the hundreds of dollars to buy it yourself. I doubt that the military insurance is any worse than mine or anybody else.

O.K so very confused about the whole paper check direct deposit thing. My friend filed with H&R Block and got her refund direct deposited and got her stimulus payment direct deposited. Yet so many people are saying that isnt going to happen. Well i know better seen the paper they sent to her showing the deposit. So all I can say to everyone is hold your breath and just pray you get one. And for the military know it all on here.. I too am a military wife I actually have 7 current immediate family members serving this country and to clarify our great circumstances.. Our health care is like having medicaid...our Bah is like section 8 housing. In a nut shell being a soldier is like being on welfare except you work for it.

I am a tax accountant. Many of my clients have already received their rebate by direct deposit as they were supposed to . I did everything right for myself - I filed in February (No choice - I have three kids in college and needed this for FAFSA reasons, otherwise I would have been on extension!) I received both Federal and State refunds by direct deposit. Scheduled to receive my rebate today by Direct Deposit. Guess what? No rebate. Don't assume that since it worked for you, it works for everyone. I called the IRS - they 'think" I am receiveing it by check instead in June. But they dont know why, or if this is definate. Not very helpful! Thanks, "W" . Stupid idea, anyway, but if everyone else is getting it, I want mine too.

I also had fees deducted from refund using turbotax. Called the bank this morning and no money... should have been here today if being direct deposited and it is not. I, for one, am never going to use turbotax again, as we should have been notified of this by turbotax! I spent hours researching this last night and they even have it on the website:http://turbotax.intuit.com/support/kb/tax-content/tax-tips/6255.html hope it helps you all be clear that this is crazy stupid, and I hope that turbotax has a fieldday with their complaints!

I am going to have to agree with kat on this one, alison I do feel sorry for you that you are sick at this time. Have you thought about disability? Also I am military and if there is a time that you can work when you feel better you can also get daycare assistance. I know what the paycharts are and I have read about how there is not that much money when they go oversea's. I beg to differ with you I have saved over 30,000 dollars. I have two children and my family lives within our means. I do not have one credit card bill and I budget budget budget. So you saying the pay sucks to some it might but remember being in the miltary has it's perks. Think about how much health insurance is if we had to pay, think about the tax free money we get if a spouse go's over to Iraq. Also think about this do you have to worry if your husband is going to get laid off. Think of the positives remember this is the choice we made.

Posted by: Kat on May 9, 2008 at 02:21 PM
To Alison: No it's not any of my business. I just get tired of hearing people complain if they COULD work. I can understand why you wouldn't be able to if you are physically sick. But you are in the minority of people that actually deserve some breaks. A lot of people complain when they are not trying to help the situation. That was what bothered me about your response. As for the pay, without taxes it would be plenty. With taxes, on some of the lower ranks, would be a little difficult especially with family.

Posted by: Alison Location: Havelock on May 9, 2008 at 02:12 PM
To KAT: For one it is know of your business why I dont work and if we are living beyond our means. But if you must know, I am physically sick and I have children who require daycare. If I go to work I am working to pay taxes, daycare and gas. Apparantly you have not seen pay charts for the military. That pay is before the government gets their share and everything comes out of it. Spend a little time talking to military families and they will tell the pay sucks!!

To:mother of 3 Location -pinkhill..Honey we are so screwed. My friend is a tax accountant. She has inside info that anyone who used Turbo Tax, E-file, or H&R Block, etc did get direct deposits if they so choose too, however - if they elected to have the fees taken out of their refunds, they still fall in that unlucky pool of people who will have to wait for a papercheck. I actually went into an H&R Block location and did the Emerald Card Advance before I filed my own taxes for the remainder, and even though I prepared my own taxes, H&R Block was still the interceptor online, and low and behold, I'm in that "gotta wait for a check" category. My last two #'s are 58, and I was really expecting mine today - but now, it's looking like the week of June 20th will be my "lucky week"...I'm sorry if you had something planned for your money - but if you've made it this far, you'll be fine. Dealing with the IRS is never predictable anyway.

Thanks Dawn, I was wating for someone who used turbo tax to give me an answer on here. I guess I shouldn't complain about it, It is free money.... right?? just one question? was yours suppose to be in on this check cycle? Mine was scheduled for the 5th and I still haven't seen it. again thank you!!!

to Alison: I'm not going to say another thing about military pay, I've seen it and know it... I could live off it. Even the lowest ranked makes enough to live off of. The question was why are you not working? Why is he taking on more than one job, and you aren't? Sounds to me like if you got a job, he wouldn't have to work two or three. Really sounds to me like you are living outside of your means.

can someone explain to me why if i done my taxes on turbo tax and used MY tax money to pay the fee, why do i have to wait to get a paper check

Posted by: Me Location: NC on May 9, 2008 at 08:45 AM
My situation is a little different than what I have seen here. We filed our taxes with Turbo Tax but we did not get a refund. We had to pay more but did so electronically. According to the schedule we should have received our rebate no later than today. I checked irs.gov and surprise....no help there.

Posted by: Jacob Location: New Hampshire on May 9, 2008 at 05:12 AM
I just did the calculator on the IRS site, and it said I would get 600. The information was 100% correct that I entered. Yet when I went to my bank today I saw it was only 300. I just did the calculator again right now and it still says 600.00 How can this be? I went out and spent 600 the other day knowing I would get it back because of the IRS calculator and now only getting 300 just put me into debt! This is not fair, I would have NEVER spent the 600 if their site told me I would only get 300 like I did. Now I have more stress and worries over this whole ordeal than if I just didn't get ANYTHING back and this rebate crap never happened. I'm so angry right now, that I can put all my info in and it says 600, yet I only got 300. Its such a crock.

Posted by: Clifton Location: Washington on May 8, 2008 at 09:06 PM
The schedule does not mean a thing. We have TWO checks that are MIA.

Posted by: Alison Location: havelock on May 8, 2008 at 07:18 PM
We did not get EIC on our taxes this year because my husband did not pay in enough taxes because he was deployed the whole year. You cannot tell me that we get enough money when my husband puts his life on the line for everyone in this country. Yes, he signed up by his own choice. The military has always been screwed when it comes to being paid. We only get good money when he is gone once every three years. What about the rest of the time when he is out working two other jobs to make ends meet? The bottom line..our government needs help..our children are going to be the ones who get screwed from all of this.

Posted by: BW Location: JERSEY on May 8, 2008 at 06:45 PM
I also used Turbo Tax online according to the Turbo Tax help desk anyone who filed on line and had there tax prep fee deducted will get a paper check anyone who paid their own fees via credit/debit card will still get direct deposit that's because the bank that turbo tax used to deduct the fees was a temp account that closed as soon as your money was transfered into your account the IRS does not have access to that account info therefore all us unlucky folk have to wait for paper to get ourpaper

Posted by: Nicki Location: NY on May 8, 2008 at 06:20 PM
Just goes to show that this stimulus check has everyone depending on it for whatever reason, another ploy by our government to screw us any way they can...noone can be sure when they are going to receive it, I came on wondering that because I filed with turbo tax that even though I gave them direct deposit info that because I file it this way, I will now be receiving a check thru the mail other than direct deposit....goes to show that something isn't for nothing and our government has come to bat for us AGAIN.....good luck to all of you that are depending on this monies..I've also heard that folks that were supposed to get a certain amount only got half, what the heck is up with that????I know better than to listen to ANY of our government officials....I'm a Democrat still trying to make something out of our candidates....to be honest, I am totally a Clinton supporter and know if she doesn't get the nomination, I WILL NOT VOTE....good luck all

Posted by: JD Location: New Bern on May 8, 2008 at 04:56 PM
Again, just because your refund was direct deposited does not mean your stimulus check will be. If you had any kind of fees withheld for tax preparation, you will receive a paper check. So, it doesn't matter really if your refund was dd or not; either way there should've been a notice at all the tax offices and online that if fees are withheld during preparation, your stimulus check will not be direct deposited regardless of the method you choose for your tax refund. BUT, there wasn't and I do blame the government for that. But, it's money and I will take it regardless of what method it comes in.

Posted by: Anonymous on May 8, 2008 at 03:53 PM
To JD: Thanks for your input, but other bloggers are saying that they got theirs refunds direct deposit even filing the way you and so many others have. so whats the deal with that? I think someone has screwed up somewhere.

Posted by: mother of 3 Location: pinkhill on May 8, 2008 at 03:51 PM
seem to me that the government is screwing us AGAIN. For all of us who went HR Block, online, etc we have to wait for a paper check. Now why can they not do paper and direct deposit at the same time for each set of ss#'s? who knows it the government.

Posted by: lyle mcclanahan Location: wichita kansas on May 8, 2008 at 01:20 PM
WHY DID I ONLY GET 300 INSTEAD OF 600?? The irs.gov stimulus calculator is wrong. You can find this information at http://www.irs.gov/newsroom/article/0,,id=181991,00.html It basically says your stimulus payment is based on your net tax liability. so of your net tax liability is <= 300.00 all you will get is 300.00 . if your net tax liability is >=601.00 you will get 600.00 Your stimulus payment is equal to your net income tax liability, but no more than $600, if you are single, or $1,200, if you are married filing a joint return.

Posted by: JD Location: New Bern on May 8, 2008 at 01:09 PM
OK-I've already posted this once, but since some people are asking for help, I will say it again. If you had your tax preparation fees withheld from your rebate, regardless of if you did them yourself using Turbo Tax or TaxAct or if you took them somewhere such as H&R Block, then you will receive a paper check. As far as the website goes for checking your refund status-the status will not show up until after your refund has been processed. Meaning, if you are to receive a paper check after May 16, your status will not show up on the website until after the 16th. It states this on the website. We got our refund direct deposited into our account, however our preparation fees were withheld from our refund, so we will receive a paper check. I hope this helps answer some questions.

Posted by: TURBO TAX user Location: greenville on May 8, 2008 at 01:06 PM
So I called the IRS to see what they had to say about it. I stayed on their hot line for 30mins before someone picked up. I asked the lady who answered the phone if she knew what the deal was if I filed with Turbo Tax and she said "I don't know how you will get your check back, I guess you'll find out when you get it." So if that helps at all why in the world would they have a hotline if they don't know anything. So again I guess I will know when I get it. But there was no reason for them to give us dates if they weren't going to use them.

Posted by: S on May 8, 2008 at 12:48 PM
I think the IRS is just choosing names at ranmdom and distributing the checks any old way. I agree, there are too many different stories and probably noone knows unless you actually work in the IRS office. But then, I don't think they know either. They have had ample time since the President okayed this stimulus, to get their ducks in a row.

Posted by: Anonymous on May 8, 2008 at 12:15 PM
I've heard so many different stories in regards to how we would get our checks, I don't know what to believe. There are some who say if you used direct deposit you will get it that way and some who say you will not. Could someone please give us some truth about it???

To the militray people and those people who make under 35k who complain about little or no rebate check. Tell us how much you got for your EIC on your tax returns that the rest of us didnt. We are a military family and when my husband came back from Iraq, our tax return was HUGE because only roughly 2 months was taxable so it looked like a family of 6 made less than 20k. The return was THOUSANDS more than what we had paid that year. Heck, Id rather take that EIC for having tax free pay over the stimulus check. I still dont think military are paid enough for what they do, but for people who claim a lower income to complain they didnt get as much as those with a larger income do, thinkk about how much you got back on your return because of the EIC you qualified for that you DIDNT pay but got as 'free' money the rest of us didnt.

Posted by: JD Location: New Bern on May 7, 2008 at 05:28 PM
OK-I had to jump in with the military pay. We have been active duty military for 7 years now, and my husband is currently serving his 4th (yes 4th!!!) tour in Iraq, and is due for Afghanistan next year after his return in Nov. Yes, they do make more while being over there, however it is hardly anything if you have a family to care for. Most of that extra pay that is brought in is used to ship boxes back over to him. I find is ridiculous that they can offer civilians over $100,000.00 just to go for 3 months, while the active duty doesn't even see a quarter of that amount. Especially when they work 7 days a week for 8 months straight. The military protects every person in this nation; they should be the highest paying personnel.

Thank you Alison....I don't usually get into these things but when it comes to my kids...I don't back down. Hey Kat....do you know for a fact what a pair of combat boots cost? I mean the ones that are tough enough so their feet won't be blistered from the hot sand? What my son has earned tax free working 24/7 in Iraq will be used to replenish his gear to go back in a few months for his third tour. What may seem like alot to some is not much for those who have to buy expensive gear. I just ran the calculator....he is making about $2.87 an hour...combat pay (he is a grunt). Not alot when you are being shot at. Yep, he signed up for it and I am proud of him. His father and I both work and pay our taxes, I just wish more went to help our military.

Posted by: Kat on May 7, 2008 at 03:47 PM
I have to wonder what these people complaining about military pay consider LITTLE? I know for a fact what they make over there with NO taxes coming out and it is by far NOT little. And Alison, since I saw somewhere down there that you aren't getting any tax money back which means that you do not work or make very little? Is this because you cannot or will not? Cause technically you would have still gotten that check had you been working and not expecting him to support you.

Posted by: Alison Location: Havelock on May 7, 2008 at 03:09 PM

God Bless you Alison and your family. My son is in Iraq too and I know how little they make. Yes they do make a little bit more for combat pay but when you consider they are working pretty much 24/7 it is very little. There is no way my son could support a family on his pay. He spends alot of his pay on gear that he needs to stay safe. And the GI bill...what a joke! Shame on our government for not taking care of our military!

Yes-there is a stimulus refund check on the irs website, BUT, if your refund has not been processed it will state that no information is retrieved. You must wait until after the date you are to receive your refund to check the status. I didn't use H&R Block because they wanted to charge us over $300!!! I did them myself on Turbo Tax paying only $30 for the state and got back exactly the same amount. H&R Block is a rip off!!! But, you will get a paper check if you had fees withheld regardless of the method you used in preparation. I too agree that this should have been a notice when filing that having fees withheld would have affected the stimulus check.

there is a place on the irs website under 'where's my refund' that people can check again for the stimulus check. when you get there you have to pick '07 refund' or 'stimulus/rebate check'. you need the first ssn listed on the 07 taxes, number of exemptions claimed, and the filing status used. after all this, it gives a date. of course, it's not guaranteed. hope this helps.

Posted by: Anonymous on May 7, 2008 at 01:34 PM
I have not received my check and it was suppose to be deposited on May 2... I filed with H & R Block and my fees came out of my refund... if this was going to affect the date of me getting my refund, why didn't the government make this known to tax payers? Insted of misleading tax payers to a specific date..........

So basically we have been lied to yet again by a government instituation, with the "trasmitted no later than" wording listed on the IRS site. My last 2 digits are 32 and I am not even scheduled for anything yet. Some say wait until the 9th, (or your perspective "date") but please...it ain't coming until the initial time they said in the first place. It was all hype and no truth. Oh, and please don't hit me up with all of your "free money, be thankful comments". I give them a hellova lot of free money every year called TAXES, that they squander and waste!! Bottom line....THEY SUCK!!

If you have gone to irs.gov and it says no information on your check yet. That means that it has not been processed as of yet.FYI they are not on time with the schedule. My ssn ends in 06 and my check date is may the 16. That is what the website said. Just kept checking the irs site to see when there is info on your check. That is going to be the correct information.

I used turbo tax and i did direct deposit, I should of had my check on the 2nd. Will I get a paper or a deposit? The website says it has no information on my check being processed. Anyone know whats really going on????

I was wonder if any one got stimulus check with last 48 already?

Posted by: Joe Stroud on May 6, 2008 at 09:43 PM
Let's see if i got this right. We borrowed money from China to give to our citizens so we can purchase more cheap junk from China. Does this make sense? May God help us all and may he forgive us for the debt we will leave our children.

TO Infomed Location I talked to H R Block they also confirmed that I would get a paper check for filling with them. To everyone else; you will not get anyone on the line with the IRS about this matter. They are not makeing it possible and dont bother e-mailing them either, they wont respond. That was confirmed to me by someone on the inside. I feel for the one person I learned I would not get my money until late june due to filling with a tax company but thankfully I will atleast get something.

Stimulus money is tax free money. Do not report it on your 2008 Tax Return.

Posted by: DANIELL :) Location: Grifton on May 6, 2008 at 04:39 PM
I just want to know how to get someone on the phone with that stupid number... When I go to the IRS website it says no information is available about my stimulus check. I like so many others have not recied my return. I did file with H&R block but I also paid the fees myself.

Hey LMN; if you owed the government money for a student loan, then you shouldn't have gotten your refund either. So you should have already known that you weren't getting a rebate. Maybe pay your student loans on time and that wouldn't happen? dont blame the government for that.

Posted by: Erin Location: New Jersey on May 6, 2008 at 03:28 PM
hey chell; maybe you should go seek one of those programs to better YOURSELF and learn how to type and articulate. I find all of your comments very offensive. Some people work 3 jobs to make ends meet, and sometimes they still don't meet. I filed my taxes in february and got my rebate. I didn't need it, had ample amount of money in the bank, but it was nice to see. Im sure when you get ur rebate ur going to just rip up the check huh?? lol yea right. you'll be spending it like everyone else. get educated, and think before you speak (or type)

i will get a paper check since we used taxact.last2 are 04 so it gets mailed the 16th of may.not fair.something to look foward 2 i guess

Posted by: JD Location: New Bern on May 6, 2008 at 12:33 PM
I found this out and thought it might help some people. If you filed your taxes online through TaxAct or TurboTax or something like that and you chose to have the fees withheld from your tax rebate, you will have a paper check mailed out to you. Even if your entire tax refund was direct deposited, you had fees come out of it before it was deposited, so therefore you will receive a check in the mail. I hope this answers some questions. It answered mine.

Posted by: me Location: nc on May 6, 2008 at 12:21 PM
I filed my taxes direct deposit through Taxact in Feb and I found out yesterday that I'm going to receive my rebate Friday May 9th direct deposit into my account. So it doesn't look like it has anything to do with taxact.

Posted by: S Location: Washington, NC on May 6, 2008 at 11:55 AM
Filed electronically in February with Turbo Tax. The rebate was direct deposited on 5/2.

Come on lets face it,, do we or should you ever count on anything from the government on time that is,,, are you dumb enough to plan on it to come when you want it to... it is pretty bad if you are depennding on any moneyto come maybe you should have other forms of income and not depwend to get money from the governmet.. hey you get what you work for.... lower income families that are just ditting they waiting there are lots of programs out there for jobs and improvement to get better jobssss.. hey get off the couch and go for it what do you have to lose......every county avery city have programs go get it...

My husband and I filed our 2007 taxes in January, received our refund in Feb by Direct deposit and I just found out this morning that we are getting a rebate but it will be mailed and not until June 27th. We can not get anyone on the phone from IRS to find out why only the automated part. The only reason we can figure out is that we did out taxes through taxact....So for everyone who did their taxes through Taxact or Turbotax..plan to wait for a paper check in the mail. This is very frustrating because we were not told that until after we planned on the money at least by May 16th at the latest. Should have know better to trust the government not to give all the details. No we are in a pinch again with the rest of America to scrap up some money to take care of our family for another month for that money was to stock up on groceries. The hardest part is explaining to your children that life for them in the future is suppose to be better and it is not.

I am upset to find out that my stimulus payment which was due to me on the 2nd of May will probably be applied to my student loan debt. I am a single parent with a four year old child. Why would the government even offer a payment if they know some won't get it because of gov't debts. Oh well, thanks for nothing!

Posted by: jay Location: rocky mount on May 5, 2008 at 03:31 PM
my ss ends with 95 .its a long wait july 11th then mailed.why cant they be maild all at once .i bet if it was a bill they would all get mailed at once.

Posted by: Anonymous on May 5, 2008 at 01:18 PM
Thank you "informed", that helps alot, I used a tax service and had direct deposit, but I suppose I will have to wait for the mailed out checks. Lived without it this long a couple of more weeks isnt going to hurt!

We do not have to claim this money on our taxes next year, nor is it a loan. This a was a rebate that we were going to get on our 2008 taxes but it was decieded that it would be given earlier. Also if anyone wants to know where there rebate is they do have a link on the irs website called where is my stimulas package.

Comment Edited.

This money isn't free, you will have to claim it as income when you file your 2008 taxes. That's where the government gets you. They say it's free money, but it's not. The US borrowed the money from China. How do you think it's going to get paid back? That's right we, the people who get the checks, will end up paying it back.

To anonymous: Ya know if I sat back like you and said it's never going to change anything then I would feel like I never at least tried. You say get over it like so many people. I say take a stand, people need to start making their voices heard rather than just "getting over it" all the time. The wrongs will never be righted with thinking like that. I will not just get over it. I have complained about the wrongness of income taxes for years and will keep on until they change to the fair tax. www.fairtax.org Only an idiot would send the money back. But it is and always will be a slap in the face from the government (ha ha look at me I have control over all your money, that will be our government if we keep letting this go on). God help us all with the president hopefuls wanting to instate a universal health care plan that we WILL pay extra taxes for and it won't be worth a thing. No thank you! Or the free community college that the governor hopefuls want, MORE taxes!

Posted by: Anonymous Location: somewhere on May 5, 2008 at 06:59 AM
kat: get over it you, have i guess been paying taxes for years, what makes you think you complaining is going to change anything, like i said if you don't want the money send it back.

My SS ends in 32 and I got my $600 thru direct deposit Saturday. It's going to help pay bills.

Posted by: me Location: here on May 5, 2008 at 04:15 AM
Taxes...Taxes...Taxes... It doesn't matter if they take our money or give it back, if I recall correctly from BASIC history, we started our own country in part because of unfair taxes(and before somebody reads this and says something, I said IN-PART, I know there were other reasons as well). And where are we today, more taxes than were ever even thought of back then. Shows alot, doesn't it? As far as this stimulus check, it doesn't matter to me. My family was broke before the check and we will still be broke after the check.

Posted by: HARVICKGURL Location: WINDSOR on May 4, 2008 at 08:57 PM
To david....how did u get 1800 dollars how did you file ....i did not know they were sending that much...

Posted by: David Location: Washington on May 4, 2008 at 07:31 PM
My $1800 "stimulus" showed up in my bank account yesterday. I quickly moved it to my savings account. I may use it to reduce the amount owed on my daughter's car... since she, and future generations will be responsible for reimbursing the government for the rebates. Come to think of it, don't I end up paying taxes on this, at least twice? Maybe three times!?!

Posted by: Infomed Location: Jacksonville on May 4, 2008 at 11:45 AM
I called the stimulas hotline number, since we had not seen our rebate check as of the 2nd. I was told that if you filed through Jackson hewitt, Liberty tax, H&R Block. ETC then you will recive it via mail. Even if you did DIRECT DEPOSIT. only because your refund went through the company's bank so they can get their fees and then went to your bank. HOPe this helps some of you!

Answer to plymouth question yes we got ours in Creswell it was Deposit in our account on may 2. Hope you recieved yours soon..

Posted by: JD Location: New Bern on May 3, 2008 at 01:34 PM
Yeah-we haven't got ours yet either and our number ends in 19. According to the schedule it should've been deposited by yesterday. We did do direct deposit and are married with 2 dependents, so we are hoping for 1800. My husband was in Iraq last year, but with my job we made enough to qualify for the stimulus check. And we don't owe anything that I'm aware of. I hope it comes soon or the government will have some explaining to do.
