March Madness: Shoot for 5- to 9-A-Day
Air Date: 3/12/2008
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Generations of moms have been proven right; eating our fruit and veggies is still top priority! And, with March Madness coming soon, instead of serving junk food for game-watching, let’s shoot for healthier snacks off the court too.
The U.S. Department of Health encourages us to increase our intake of fruits and veggies from the old five servings a day to the new goal of between 9 and 13 a day! Sounds like a lot, but it really isn’t, because a typical serving size should fit in the palm of your hand. That’s pretty doable.
The typical American averages about just over four servings of veggies and fruit a day.
Here are some tips we can use to score higher:
For munching in front of the TV, serve trail mix that includes dried fruit like apricots, cranberries, apples, raisins and dates. That makes for some really tasty nibbling.
Put out raw veggies with a low-fat dip instead of chips and candies.
Make a light or low-fat spinach or artichoke spread to get extra servings of veggies.
Serve a black bean or corn salsa if you must indulge in chips. And, make sure those chips are baked not fried.
Remember: Any kind of fresh fruit, even dipped in melted chocolate, counts too!
Shooting for those new healthy guidelines means we will come out winners as we score a slam dunk!
