Hundreds of firefighters, police officers and members of the community paid their last respects today to firefighter Gene Thomas.

The 51-year-old Thomas was an assistant chief with the Verona Fire Department. He died Saturday after being struck by a tractor trailer while on duty.

A full firefighter's funeral and processional was held in Jacksonville. Firefighters lined up in formation and saluted one last time as Thomas's casket, draped with an American flag, was loaded onto his company's fire truck.

His fellow brothers described Thomas as a leader and someone with a heart of a servant.

Thomas is the third firefighter killed on duty in Onslow County in just over a year. Two volunteers from Rhodestown were killed last March while en route to a fire.

Sheriff's deputy Steve Boehm was also killed. His funeral will be noon Wednesday at White Oak High School.

Monday's Story

Two white crosses adorned with flowers and two orange and yellow reflective vests sit on Highway 17 south just outside of Jacksonville where Verona assistant fire chief Gene Thomas, and school resource officer and Onslow County sheriff's deputy Steve Boehm were killed Saturday.

Father's Day cards from the children of both men reflect their love for two first responders who died while serving the county's citizens. Sheriff Ed Brown says after responding to an accident on Highway 17 south Saturday, deputy Boehm walked across the road to assist with another accident in the northbound lane. He says both deputy Boehm and fireman Thomas were hit and killed by a passing tractor trailer.

Smoke from an ongoing fire at Camp Lejeune, heavy fog, and no wind, left drivers with zero visibility Saturday.

Thomas will be laid to rest Tuesday after a full fireman's funeral and processional. Boehm's funeral will be held Wednesday at White Oak high school where he worked and graduated high school.

The State Highway Patrol says the driver of the tractor trailer 51 year-old Robert Lee Kornegay of Fayetteville, is charged with misdeamnor death by vehicle.

Funeral Arrangements

Funerals have now been set for two public servants killed in the line of duty this past weekend.

Onslow County Deputy Steve Boehm and Verona firefighter Gene Thomas died when they were hit by a tractor trailer on Highway 17 Saturday morning.

Thomas' funeral will be held at Jones Funeral Home Chapel In Jacksonville on Tuesday at 11a.m.

A memorial service for Deputy Boehm takes place on Wednesday at White Oak High School in Jacksonville at 3 p.m.

Saturday's Story
An Onslow County sheriff's deputy and a volunteer firefighter were killed while directing traffic early Saturday morning. The tractor trailer driver has now been charged.

An Onslow County sheriff's deputy and a Verona volunteer firefighter were killed Saturday morning at a traffic accident on Highway 17.

Heavy smoke from a fire burning on Camp Lejeune and fog had caused several accidents near Verona and authorities say visibility in the area was down to nearly zero at the time of the wreck.

The sheriff's department says Deputy Steve Boehm and fireman Gene Thomas were killed by an oncoming tractor trailer.

Another officer, Deputy Bill Hall, was injured. He was taken to New Hanover Memorial Hospital and has since been released.

A new release says both deputies had their emergency blue lights activated when the accident happened.

Troopers have charged 51-year-old truck driver Robert Kornegay of Fayetteville with two counts of misdemeanor death by vehicle and exceeding a safe speed. Highway Patrol Lt. Everett Clendenin said a magistrate released him Saturday on his own recognizance.

U.S. 17 was closed down for several hours after the accident because of the visibility problems.

Camp Lejeune says the fire began May 20th on Range R-6 in the Greater Sandy Run Area as a result of .50 caliber machine gun shooting. The base says the fire was reported to Onslow County Emergency Services that same day.

This picture, provided by the Onslow Co. Sheriff\'s Department, shows conditions at the time of the fatal accident.

Duly note! that the service of these two fine public servants are complete here on earth. there were many days and many nights of unrest for these two wonderful servants of our community. I know now they both will rest in HEAVEN, and will receive a great reward unknown to us here on earth for their many unselfish acts of sacrifice and service to us all!! God bless both families with peace through this time. I know now that there are two more ANGELS in HEAVEN looking over us who serve the public. God bless us all!!!!

Just because he "didnt mean" to hit anyone, doesnt change the fact that an officer and a fire fighter were both killed. If you would read the accident report, it was notated that the driver of the truck failed to reduce his speed when entering the area. The law is the law, as ridiculous and unfair as it can be sometimes, it still stands. Also, the report states that fire officials were checking the conditions of the fire daily, this unfortunate accident took place in the early hours of the morning and 911 dispatch was notified as soon as the smoke was noticed and as soon as someone was aware of the conditions along the highway.

Ok another truck driver is blamed for a tragedy thats not his fault..I think the military needs to take the blame for this one..I didnt know about the smoke that is from a fire that has been burning since last month??but then again its military, why blame them let a truck driver be charged for death my motor vehicle because of their smoke..my sincere prayers go to the famlies of the two men that were killed serving what they believed in and living for their families but i can truly say the truck driver did not mean no harm..He was only doing his job just like them..He did not do it on purpose..If he could put it in reverse he would have..The pic says it all..

Posted by: don Location: jacksonville on Jun 16, 2008 at 09:32 PM
to previous writers, The truck driver hit a wall of smoke with no warning, he may have been speeding at first but did downshift quickly. The base did not attempt to put it out and if they are not stepped on a bit they will do it again they knew this could happen and gambled. This is a bad experience for all and lessons should be learned by all.

I must correct my posting at 3:12pm today. When addressing "Daddy's Girl", I named Deputy Hall's family when in fact I meant to write Deputy Steve Boehm's family. Also, I certainly hope Deputy Hall will have a successful and speedy recovery from his injuries. And, Deputy Hall, I hope you find the strength needed to cope with the loss of 2 of your colleagues. Many prayers are with you!

Posted by: omgosh Location: NC on Jun 16, 2008 at 03:16 PM
It's obvious no one knows how fast the truck driver was going. He may have slowed down, but this was just a freak accident. The base should be held accountable because of the smoke problem. Did they have any of their men out there controlling the smoke problem? I doubt it seriously! My deepest sympathy goes out to both families for such a traggic loss, and also to Mr. Kornegay who has to live with this tragedy the rest of his life. God Bless all!

Posted by: Hello Location: NC on Jun 16, 2008 at 03:12 PM
To Daddy's Girl: Your sincere comments to Deputy Hall's family posted yesterday are so touching! I am so sorry that you have lost your Dad prematurely. May you, your family, and Deputy Hall's family know that many of us are praying for all of you. They both held positions in your community that are so often taken for granted by many. I hope that time will help ease your pain.

My thoughts and prayers are with the Boehm and Thomas families as well as their respective departments during this trying time. We can all "what if" this incident to pieces, but what happened is the unfortunate reality of today. Stop trying to point fingers, as it won't change anything today. Remember Deputy Boehm's and Assistant Cheif Thomas' service and sacrafice while doing what they loved to do. God bless them and their families. Everyone please be careful the next time you approach flashing lights.

Our prayers go out to the families of these 2 men and their fellow public servants. They made the ultimate sacrifice.

Posted by: LEO Location: jacksonville on Jun 16, 2008 at 10:13 AM
Sympathy, How can you say that the county needs to be held liable? All of that is base property and the whole thing is avoided if you slow down cause you cant see! YOU, obvisouly don't need to be driving on our road either with that thought process! If you cant see slow down, thats one of the first things they teach you in driver's Ed. In a two week period we've had 4 LEO's injuried, 1 LEO killed and a fire fighter killed! SLOW DOWN and pay attention!

Posted by: mom Location: kinston on Jun 16, 2008 at 08:26 AM
My prayers are with the families of the two public officials who lost their lives and my prayers are also with Mr Kornegay and his family. This is tragic for all three families, I am sure that Mr Kornegay never meant to cause these deaths and would probably go back and change things if he could. God Bless ALL of you involved with this tragedy.

Something needs to be done with the section of Highway 17 between Verona and Highway 210. The accident that killed these men was actually 3 seperate collisions. Tonight there was another, and there was one last week. 5 accidents on a 3 or 4 mile stretch of Highway within a week leads me to beleive that something is not right. I don't think anyone was seriously hurt tonight but when I passed by there was not yet any emergancy crews on site so I'm not sure. I called it in to local 911 and a few miles up passed the Verona Fire Dept on their way, once again, to the same location as yesterday. I can't imagine tonight is very easy for them. I feel for everyone involved and I hope that something is done soon to fix this part of the Highway.

Posted by: Sympathy Location: Jacksonville on Jun 15, 2008 at 09:28 PM
I would like to offer my deepest sympathies to all three of the men that we involved, the officer, firefighter, and the truck driver. I live in the area, and I know that the smoke that night came up on you before you knew what happened. I believe that the fault lies with Camp Lejeune and with Onslow County for not closing the road, and for not making the public aware of this fire. I had been trying to locate information on this fire for weeks because the smoke is so heavy at my house, but there hasn't been any information. Maybe if they would have put the signs up that they have now this would not have happened. Also, You can tell from the skid marks that the truck driver stopped very quickly, but unfortunatly a semi can't stop very fast. I hope that a judge/jury doesn't make this freak accident any worse than it already is.

Posted by: Denise Location: Mills River, NC on Jun 15, 2008 at 08:59 PM
My heart goes out to the families of the deputy & firefighter...my first husband was also killed in the line of duty when struck by a tractor trailer. When will these "supposedly professional truck drivers" learn to slow down. If the visibility was so bad, wouldn't he have had the common sense to get off the road somewhere or at least slow way down. I pray the Lord will wrap his loving arms around these two families and the members of their departments also. I hope members of the community will show their support to the families! Remember, these two men died while trying to make your community a safer place for you!

I would like to offer the correction of the High School that Officer Boehm worked at. The name of the school is White Oak High School, not White Head High School. I grew up and went to school with this man. He was a wonderful person to know, and made you feel like you wanted to be a better person because you knew him. My condolences go to his family. Our hearts are with you during this difficult time.

I've known Steve Boehm for over 15 years and I'm very saddened by his loss and can't begin to imagine the pain his wife & children are feeling. It is very important to me that everyone remember Steve for the kind, giving funny soul he was. Steve always knew how to make the crowd laugh and have a great time, and was always there for you with what ever you needed. I know these wonderful qualitites are what made Steve not only a wonderful husband & father to his family, but also a role model to his community & the students he helped by serving as their resource officer. Steve you will forever be missed & trust me your legacy will live on, you can bet your fellow Vikings will make sure that happens!!! We love & miss you Steve!!! May peace be with you & love continue to embrace your family through this tough time!! Namaste'- Melissa

first let me say what a terrible tragic accident this was and my sympathies go out to both families.Second what on earth are you trying to charge the driver of this for? Even ed brown said there was nothing that could have been done different on the news last night it was not one single thing that could have been changed to avoid the accident.while i do feel sorry for the families remember this driver has to live with killing two men the rest of his life and now you want to put him on trial for something that you yourself said could not have been avoided? He wasn't drunk,he wasn't DWLR,and he clearly should have slowed down but how well did you have that accident site marked. You could have set up an advance road warning sign to warn drivers coming into the site with little or no visibility can you really hold this man accountable for his actions when you dropped the ball to protect everyone concerned ? Any lawyer that just passed the bar will have this thrown out of court.

Posted by: chris on Jun 15, 2008 at 10:08 AM
sounds like the base is just as much at fault as the driver for letting the fire burn

my heart goes out to both the families in there time of loss god be with both families and give them strength to get pass this and i also agree with these people that carry these CDL licenses they know to slow down and like other people out there and this fools out there driving crazy are putting innocent people in danger life is not to be rushed slow down your not going to get to where your going any faster the only thing is your going to kill yourself or some innocent person ... God be with you all and I send my thoughts and prayers

Deputy Steve was a good friend as well as a good cop. He was nice to all he met. He tried his best to keep us kids out of trouble when things went south. He was a good man, a loving father and husband, and one heck of a good friend. He will be sorely missed by any who came in contact with him. Steve was an outstanding guy and was one of my friends. I will never forget the smile he gave me when I graduated from White Oak High School 2 years ago. Much love to his family, you have the love, prayers, and support of an entire county behind you.

Steve was our SRO at Dixon Middle and most recently at White Oak High School. He was such a wonderful person. He could always make you laugh and brighten up your day. The students on campus really liked him and he liked being with them. He took his job seriously. I know I will certainly miss him. It won't be the same without his smiling face. My heart and prayers go out to his wife Kim and their children.

Some of you people are flat out ridiculous! two people are dead from an ACCIDENT, and yet you want to question who let the fire burn? Do you honestly think they wanted this to happen? Grow up!

Posted by: anonymous Location: beaufort county on Jun 14, 2008 at 07:55 PM
People tend to not realize that men like these that were killed "volunteer" their time to help protect us! Whether they get paid or not -police, fire and rescue are there to help us all. It is a shame that the truck driver was not even thinking about the fact that he couldn't see and needed to slow down even if it meant pulling over until he thought he could. People are in to big of a hurry now a days, slow down, pay attention you are not the only one on the road. God Bless these wonderful men who put their lives in danger to protect everyone else. Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone involved.

I understand that Onslow County Emergency Management has been notified about this fire that started from a .50 cal shoot. However, has anyone from the base asked for assistance in putting out this fire that has been burning for almost a month? Is it that much out of control that there is nothing we can do or could have done to ensure the safety of our citizens? I'm sure the Volunteer Firefighter would have gladly donated his time to assist if he knew his life may someday depend on it.

An EMS Tech had called in earlier and told his dispatch that there was "0" visibility on 17 and the road needed to be closed. Now 2 people are dead... Shame on Onslow county and the base for doing a controlled burn in these dry conditions..

EDITOR'S NOTE: Camp Lejeune says the fire was not a controlled burn. The base says a Daily News article with that information was incorrect. Camp Lejeune says the fire started as a result of a .50 caliber machine gun shoot on May 20th and was reported to Onslow County Emergency Services that same day.
