More N.C. Beach Closed After Sign Vandalism Save Email Print

A section of beach closed for bird nest protection has been enlarged because vandals tore down National Park Service boundary signs.

Park spokeswoman Cyndy Holda said Monday that 12 signs were torn
down in the South Beach area of Hatteras Island and were discovered
Saturday by a ranger. Under terms of a court consent decree, the
signs were moved out an additional 150 feet.

Holda said no one had been apprehended and there has been no
more vandalism.

The decree spells out closures allowed to protect the nests of
endangered birds and turtles. It was agreed to with conservation
groups that had sued the park service seeking stricter rules.

I am a property owner on Pea Island and have talked to many locals about this. Beach closures will devastate the economy there. Business closures and individual foreclosures will soar as a result. Not only will the economy and livelyhoods be detroyed, many people enjoyed vacationing there and some have for generations. Most locals believe the sign destruction was done by the bird people themselves. Why would a local or even a tourist do that knowing the consequences? Or, even if they didn't know about the court ruling, why would they do that? I've personaly seen the signed posted for years now and have never noticed them damaged or moved. The perpetrators quite possibley have a hidden agenda for those acts. Plus the bird don't nest near the surf where they're exposed to hurricanes and nor-easters. And, the vehicle paths are near the surf. The birds go for more cover, in the dunes, and someone would have to go out of their way to bother them with a vehicle.

I would have to agree cactus. Mikey likes to tax. And as for the yearly permit, I already have one for Freeman Park in New Hanover county, 40 bucks a year. Small price to pay for something you enjoy.

You are right, Bush would collect the tax. Gov. Mike seems to have a need to tax all things. The yearly permit could be a good thing.

Sorry, I didn't read down far enough! I did find it odd that someone named "destruction" suggested closing the whole dang beach because the beach drivers took the law into their own hands. First of all there aren't near as many drivers this time of year, especially with the lousy weather. I'm rarely venture out in a northeast blow because I know I will be out there pretty much by myself. Not to say that "destruction" perpetrated the act, but I'll bet he/she is on the side of the activist. Well so am I to an extent, but at what cost. It is the people that go out there (with the exception of a group that will tear things up no matter where they go) that watch over the wildlife and make the rangers aware of what is going on. Stopping beach access will endanger more than it will protect; and that's not even counting how it will endanger the people who count on tourism to survive. Tourism dollars provided by those that drive on the beach are essential for their survival.

Has anyone considered that it was perhaps the environmentalist who commited the act of vandalism? Now there is absolutely nothing wrong with protecting the environment, but some of these folks that come forward with these claims that lead to closures are a bit on the fruity side. I have always tried not to use the term "tree hugging whacko" as there is nothing wrong with loving nature. But this beach thing is about to frazzle my last nerve. I wouldn't put it past some nut-biscuit who is miffed over not getting a total closure committing the vandalism. And Cactus...it would be BUSH taxing us not Easly! And, I would have no problem paying for a yearly permit to drive on the beach, that in itself would probably eliminate a great number of the idiots that cause the majority of the problems from even showing up to begin with.

I strongly suspect that the "vandals" in this case are local people or fisherman who are tired of the fact that these so called conservation groups are using the courts to meddle in their lives. Most of the people in these groups that take the Park Service to court have never even set foot on island but yet the think they know what is best for the island. What is it going to take to get America to wake up and stop letting a few "Good People" run their lives?

To Cactus, not sure if you were being funny but business's have already started feeling the effects of this consent decree. Layoffs have begun and many rentals have already been cancelled. Furthermore if you do some research it is actuaaly called Cape Hatteras National Recreation Park. Part of the original deal when the land was taken by the federal Government, was that it wasn't a wildlife park. And none of the birds in this decree are endangered. This is B.S. and the mosrt worrisome paret is a federal Judge Boyle has MADE law from the becnh which is unconstituional. That part needs to be addressed.

Lovinhatterasislandtoo, I have thought the very same thing. What keeps "them" from breaking the rules to get what they want? How would anyone know it was them? Does anyone have any ideas on how the locals can stop this from happening? I know the NPS says they are on our side but it just doesn't seem that way. We were never aloud to give our input on the settlement and the economic impact was never even considered in the settlement not to mention they never gave any real scientific evidence to back their claims. I can remember during Isabel their were rumors that NPS wanted to take over Hatteras Village when the road broke. I am beginning to wonder if it was a rumor! Are they really trying to help us or not! We are the victims not the birds! Slowly, they are getting rid of people. And folks don't seem to get it not only are cars not aloud when the close off sections, it is closed from people too! I think the birds have plenty with Pea Island and Portsmouth Island~

Hey Gov. Mike heres your chance to tax the beach drivers, $50.00 per day should do it.

Sounds a bit suspicious... The court consent decree was written to allow for additional area added as a result of vandalism? Who's to say it wasn't one of the activist??? Can't prove it wasn't. Seems their actions are extreme at times to reach their ultimate goal.

If vandalism keeps up close the whole dang beach, seem beach drivers have taken the law into their own hands.
