The American Red Cross is assisting families in Bertie and Onslow Counties impacted by Sunday's tornadoes.

Two teams from the American Red Cross Chapters in Martin and Pitt Counties responded to the tornado in Lewiston, Bertie County. Volunteers and staff met with families at the Lewiston-Woodville Fire Department, who found five homes destroyed and ten with major damage. The Red Cross provided
food and water and distributed financial assistance.

American Red Cross Regional Executive Lynwood Roberson said, "We will have volunteers on site at Mount Olive Baptist Church Tuesday to
assist any other families with client case work and financial assistance who come forward.

To make a financial donation to support these families, send it to the Frederick E. Turnage Chapter, 326 S. Franklin St., Rocky Mount, NC 27804 and designate for the Bertie County tornado disaster. You can also call (252) 977-1720.

The Onslow County Chapter of the American Red Cross responded to the request for help from the members of the Belgrade Community in the aftermath of the tornado that touched Sunday. The chapter responded to a call from Onslow County Emergency Management and arrived on the scene Sunday night. The chapter is providing individual assistance for emergency needs of clothing, food, and shelter to the families needing assistance.

The chapter sent a damage assessment team to the community Tuesday morning to walk through the area and speak with families. The chapter also provided breakfast, lunch, and beverages throughout the day to those affected by the storm and the responders who were on the scene to help.

The Red Cross is accepting financial contributions to assist with the response. Checks may be mailed to the chapter at 12 Ruth Street, Jacksonville NC 28540 or call 910-347-3581 for additional information.

I cannot praise The American Red Cross enough. I'm a Hyde Co. resident. When we got flooded in 1999 then 2003 that group was here. I guess those precious people fed folks here for possibly 2 weeks or longer. They left their homes and families behind to go where the need was, and we met some wonderful people from all over this great country of ours. God Bless them and you folks that are currently receiving their services.
