Authorities now say seven structures were destroyed by last night's tornado that struck Belgrade in Onslow County.

Emergency management says 9 other structures in Onlsow County received major damage, while 6 sustained minor damage from the storm.

The EF-2 tornado touched down on near the Onslow-Jones County line Sunday, injuring six people.

Six people suffered minor injuries. People on the scene say a nine-year-old girl was hospitalized after a refrigerator hit her in the head. Sources also say her mother was hit by a microwave.

In addition to homes, a convenience store and a church were heavily damaged.

Jerry Parker says he's owned the convenience store that was destroyed since 1947. He also owned six mobile homes that the tornado destroyed. Parker tells WITN, he estimates his damage will be around $500,000. Parker says he has no insurance.

Sunday Night's Story

The tornado touched down just before 7 p.m. Sunday near the intersection of Highway 17 and Swansboro-Belgrade extension. The Onslow County Emergency Medical Services, Pender County EMS and Johnson Emergency Medical Services treated and transported the victims.

Several emergency crews responded to the tornado scene, including the Belgrade Volunteer Fire Department, the White Oak Volunteer Fire Department, Loco Volunteer Fire Department, Pumpkin Center Volunteer Fire Department and Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune Fire Department.

At midnight, Progress Energy was still working to restore electricity to customers in the area.

North Carolina Forestry and North Carolina Department of Transportation crews, the North Carolina Highway Patrol and the Onslow County Red Cross Chapter were also on the scene to help.
