Wednesday nights beach condo fire has many living or vacationing in the Indian Beach community wondering if a sprinkler system could have saved the building.

The newest portion of the development and emergency codes call for a sprinkler system to be installed. The oceanfront building constructed 7 years ago that burned down did not have sprinklers installed. Fire officials would not say that a system would have saved the condos, but only that in most cases, a sprinkler system can only help.

The cause of the fire might not be known until next week. Officials with the Homeowners Association at Ocean Club say a new building built there would be equipped with sprinklers because of emergency codes.

What about all the other buildings already built without sprinklers? It seems that history repeats itself. Lets not have this happen again!!!!

The sprinklers would likely have saved the building, but more importantly would have definately saved the lives! The fire service needs the support of the public to ensure that all residential property has sprinklers forward. Smoke detectors and sprinklers save lives! And they pay for themselves in insurance breaks!

Your article for installing sprinklers only reinforces the dilemna that all of the fire officials in NC face. We have tried to get a residential sprinkler bill passed for many years but since too many people think that they are UGLY or add too much cost to a project need to look again. While this condo fire is a tragic loss, the installation of a residential sprinkler system would be prevented this tragedy from going where it went. The time is now for the homebuilders to come over to the fire side and support home sprinklers and quit being so negative about them
