Three illegal aliens with criminal convictions face deportation after Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers took them into custody here in North Carolina.

WITN News was with the ICE officials, some from as far away as Atlanta and Miami, when they made the busts last week in Durham, Raleigh and Garner.

Two of the three apprehended were fugitives. They were convicted, spent time in prison, were released and ordered to leave the country, but didn't. The third was a convicted sex predator in the U.S. illegally.

One of the individuals arrested, Juan Enamarodo of Durham, was a convicted cocaine and heroin trafficker who eluded authorities in New York and New Jersey.

All three were taken to the ICE Office in Cary where the deportation process began. ICE Officers will check to see if they have any outstanding warrants. Once that is done the removal process begins. That could take weeks or even years.

There are 75 ICE Fugitive Operations teams in the United States, two of them in North Carolina. The Fugitive Operations teams arrested just over 30,000 illegal alien fugitives in 2007.

While ICE busts may be more common in the larger areas of our state, law enforcement officials in eastern Carolina do have several programs to fight illegal immigration. Be sure to watch WITN News at Six on Wednesday for that report.

This is a new way to approach coverage; hanging out with ICE officials for the day. For those who have watched the piece with interest and want to learn more about what ICE does and is doing, I urge you to check out http://raidreport.blogspot.com for a daily-updated archive of ICE activity across the country.

Hey Dave, It's called "Immigration AND Customs Enforcement"; we enforce Immigration AND Customs laws. It is not "Immigration, Customs and Enforcement" as printed and pronounced by you in your piece...how could you screw that up after having hung out with these guys and ridden with them on the street?

Editor's Note: Thanks for the heads up. We moved the "and" to the right place.

Get the illegals out of the country already. I'de rather deal with the economic impact of not having cheap labor than have to learn Spanish for God sakes!

If you want to find them go to Walmart on Sundays and check green cards.

For those of you sucking off of welfare and other public services, you have no say in this matter. Get off your lazy butts and get a job so the rest of us hard working Americans don't have to support you and whatever habit you have that is keeping you from being a product citizen. As for the illegals, they have no right whatsoever to be in this country. And quite whining about breaking up families. They knew what they were getting into when they committed the crime of crossing our borders illegally and under the cover of darkness. They know they can have their anchor babies once they illegally establish themselves in the U.S. This means applying illegally for welfare and WIC and using our ERs as doctor's offices. Enough already. Deport them all and let them apply for citizenship if they want it so bad.

It is so funny to me how everybody makes such a fuss about this. If Americans weren't so darned lazy, employers wouldn't have to seek aliens to get jobs done!! And the illegals don't feed off of the government, in fact if you aren't a citizen, you can't receive any help from them. Their children who were born here can be helped, but not the parents.

Ok children (some are acting like 5 and 6 years old)why are you fussing about welfare and whos getting check and whos not getting checks. For starters blame the system for arresting these immigrants and releasing them knowing that they are illegal. Blame the system for allowing people to leash funds from the system. When you say immigrants they are of all nationality, from several different countries. This article stated nothing about welfare..only about illegal immigrants. I notice someone made the comment about they rather sit back and collect welfare than cut cabbage for pennies. Those pennies can carry you a longer ways than that welfare. Lets focus on what the article are saying..

Let's see, if ICE captures, and deports 30,000 fugitibes, a year, that means in approximately one half of a millenium, barring any new births, we should be well om our way to being alien free....... How about if we just convince all states to mandate the use of E-Verify, and force all of the illegals out of any, and all, jobs, by the end of 2010. Seems that might work a lot better. After all, from the looks of things, Oklahoma, and Arizona, the two front-runners in anti-illegal immigration, are doing very, very, well from the use of E-Verify. There's lots more room in the AZ classrooms now, short waits in the ER, and even less traffic on the roads. Oklahoma's unemployment has plummeted; Oklahoma has the 4th lowest unemployment rate in the nation, all in a very short time..

Unless the American citizenry start to demand accountability from their politicians where the immigration laws are concerned, nothing will change. Honest environmentalists will be let down because of overpopulation, the American working and professional classes will be let down, crime will increase, quality of life decrease. You cannot import tens of millions of people, who require huge social costs and expect to have a first world nation. No way.

I agree that if us Americans would do the job that they illegals were brought here to do. There would have been no need to have brought them over here. Not to mention the illegals will work for less then we Americans will. The problem now lies in the fact that some of those illegals have underage children that are legal. What now? Yes we should send the ones that are illegal back but then we have children that are either going to become illegal somewhere else or left alone because their illegal parents have been deported. I am not saying they need to stay I am just stating the truth. I would love for ALL of them to be deported, the school my kids go to is 75% hispanic with the remaining 25% black and white. There are numerous ESL classes because they DO NOT speak the language. Now I do think if you are in the country you should speak the language.

Well, with the media spending all this time shadowing ICE agents, I wonder if they plan to stop the cameras from rolling when they bust into families' homes and separate legal kids from their parents. How much fun! What ratings! Nearly as exciting as tagging along with those troops at the beginning of this war that was supposed to be a piece of cake. This is real life and these are real people putting their lives on the line for their families. I wish this broken immigration system wasn't treated like a game of whack-a-mole or paintball.

If all these lazy legal people would get off their butts and do the jobs and quit drawimg welfare, there wouldn't be any jobs for the illegals to do.

Posted by: Glen Location: Washington on Apr 29, 2008 at 08:06 PM
We have a group of people between the jobs and illegal people that are sucking up welfare and they can make more money sitting on their butts than they can working. Fix that, shut off their funds and the illegal problem will go away.

Posted by: Anonymous Location: Williamston on Apr 29, 2008 at 06:44 PM
They said it could take weeks, months even years before they are deported. They will probably return to the states in less than a week.

Posted by: Jim Location: Pitt County on Apr 29, 2008 at 06:39 PM
There is no reason for not enforcing our immigration laws. Jobs are the main reason we are being overrun with illegal aliens. If they started prosecuting the people hiring them we would not have this problem. If illegal aliens could not get jobs they would leave.

With a poultry plant going to start construction in lenoir county and planning to hire 15-16 hundred worker's let's hope this is not going to become a mecca for illegals and that Sanderson farm's will use the federal E-VERIFY method of screening it's future employee's

They should have been deported after serving the time in prison, instead of being released in the US. Also why does ICE not arrest all illegals in this country. We sure have a plenty here in dare county.

Posted by: Robert Location: Greenville on Apr 29, 2008 at 06:21 PM
The newsreader said that ICE was looking for other illegal aliens who have committed crimes. What he should have said was committed other crimes too. Being an illegal alien is a crime.

Posted by: Aaron Location: Winterville on Apr 29, 2008 at 06:16 PM
It was interesting to see that the ICE agents are spending time arresting illegals who have served time. Common sense asks why are these illegals not automatically deported upon completion of sentence.
