Colorado Lawmaker Calls Mexican Immigrants "Illiterate Peasants" Save Email Print

DENVER (AP) -- A Colorado legislator known for kicking a photographer was ordered to leave the podium of the state House of Representatives on Monday because he called Mexican workers "illiterate peasants."

State Rep. Douglas Bruce, who has a history of provoking controversy, made the comment during debate on a bill that would allow the state to help immigrant workers get temporary federal visas. The measure is intended to ease a shortage of farm workers in the state.

"I would like to have the opportunity to state at the microphone why I don't think we need 5,000 more illiterate peasants in Colorado," Bruce said.

His outburst drew an audible gasp from the House.

"How dare you," said state Rep. Kathleen Curry, a Democrat who was serving as chairwoman during the debate. She told the Republican lawmaker he was no longer recognized to speak.

House Minority Leader Mike May, head of the GOP caucus, said legislative leaders were trying to determine what action to take against Bruce.

Rep. Terrance Carroll, a Democrat, said the remark could result in a formal ethics complaint that would require a hearing and possible suspension, censure or expulsion.

Bruce later defended his remarks.

"I looked up 'illiterate' in the dictionary and it means somebody who is lacking in formal education or is unable to read and write," he said. "I don't think these people who are planning to come over here and pick potatoes or peaches are likely to have much of a formal education. I looked up the word 'peasant.' The word 'peasant' means a person who works in agricultural fields.

"These people, most of them, don't speak English. Most of them haven't had any formal education, that's why they're coming over here. I don't blame them for trying, but I don't think we should pave the way for more aliens to come here," he said.

Bruce became the first Colorado lawmaker censured by the House after he kicked a newspaper photographer for taking his picture during a prayer.

Republicans later removed him from the powerful State, Veterans and Military Affairs Committee because he refused to co-sponsor a resolution honoring military veterans. Bruce said he believed resolutions were a waste of time because they have no legal effect.

The Mexican Consulate in Denver did not immediately return a call seeking comment.

Besides, this whole illegal immigration problem has me torn. Some of these people (peasants) are trying to escape a life of poverty. I've always heard that there are two classes of people in Mexico (actually I think it can apply to almost all of Central and South America!) The Rich and the Poor...there is no inbetween. I say invade Mexico and take it over. Give those people FREEDOM and a true Democracy. Make them US Citizens!

MM, Yes, I read the last paragraph. So what? It did not say that he was kicked off the powerful State, Veterans and Military Affairs Committee for dishonoring Military Veterans. He was kicked off because he refused to co-sponsor a resolution honoring military veterans because he thought resolutions were a waste of time. Not that I agree with that statement....BUT, again, what does that have to do with the story anyway? Or how I view him? Or what he said?

they are illiterate lawbreaking peasants that should be sent back home. Sneak into Mexico and see what happens to you people. We should pratice the same laws as Mexico concerning illegal aliens

He is right on with his comments. NAME ME AN ILLEGAL THATS LITERATE!! There are not many AMERICAN CITIZENS that are literate, much less illegals. The illegals surely are not wealthy professionals coming across the border, THUS making them PEASANTS definition for you IDIOTS is: NOUN: 1. A member of the class constituted by small farmers and tenants, sharecroppers, and laborers on the land where they form the main labor force in agriculture. Almost 2/3 of the federal penitentiary system is inundated by illegals. Here's a good link to some facts for you apologist morons. http://www.prisonplanet.com/articles/july2007/270707Statistics.htm BUILD A FENCE, DEPORT ALL ILLEGAL CRIMINALS, AND FINE MEXICO 1 BARREL OF OIL FOR EVERY ILLEGAL REMAINING HERE FOR THEIR BLATANT SUPPORT AND ENCOURAGEMENT FOR THE ILLEGAL CROSSING INTO OUR LAND. We will save over 1.2 billion a year JUST in taking the criminals out of our jails!!! Do the right thing. Its all "ok" until an illegal kills someone you know!

Rep. Bruce does have a RIGHT to voice his opinions. If Rep. Bruce was recognized and had the floor, then what right did any other law maker have to interupt him? Now, if he said something offensive or someone disagreed with his opinion, then they should have waited to be recognized and had their say. THAT is Freedom of Speech and THAT, my friends, is Freedom of Expression. Rep. Curry should have waited until Rep. Bruce had finished. She could have had her say, or opened the floor to discussion or debate. HOW DARE YOU, MS. CURRY!

This dude sounds like ignorance at it's finest. Maybe he should be sent to the fields to work a few days or have to leave his own country just to support his family. Walk a few miles in someone's shoes.

I do not blame him one bit!!!
