Officials say wildfires have consumed about 1,000 acres in North Carolina's mountains and could burn for days because of the rugged terrain despite the hope that light rain and higher humidity would help.

The Asheville Citizen-Times reported Saturday that a fire started near Waynesville before burning about 425 acres as it spread into Jackson County.

State forestry official David Brown said the fire spread Friday
night due to winds, but had slowed its advance.

A federal forest official also said a fire south of Linville Falls had burned about 450 acres of woodland.

Terry Seyden said the area had received some rain but not enough to extinguish the fire.

A fire in Madison County burned 178 acres before it was contained.
