The man who Jacksonville police say disarmed a gunman Easter Sunday morning talked about his ordeal today.
Chris Deshotel told WITN that his 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. shift at the Yopp Road Wal-Mart started like any other Saturday night, that is until he went on break.
Deshotel says fellow employee Eliah Payne came in with his face painted black and armed with a sawed-off shotgun.
"About 2:30 is when he came in, the first shot fired it kinda sounded like something went off in microwave. Elijah he told everyone to get on the floor," says Deshotel.
Deshotel says at first he didn't realize the man with the gun and face paint was his friend and co-worker. The employee says Payne told everyone to get out of the break room. Deshotel then said Payne called him by name and told him to walk out real slowly.
He says his adrenaline was pumping and he jumped up and fought with the gunman.
"I told him if he gave me the gun, I wouldn't hurt him...he could walk out. We struggled a bit more."
Deshotel says he grabbed the gun, then he and Payne were surrounded by dozens of other police officers, including Deshotel's dad--a Richlands cop.
"Some people look at it as being a hero, I look at it as saving my life," says Deshotel.
