A man accused of shooting up the new Jacksonville Walmart made his first court appearance Monday.

Police say 18 year old Elijah Payne was working there at the time. They say he went on an employee break from his shift around 2:30 A.M. That's when he reportedly went to his car, grabbed a sawed off shotgun and covered his face in cami paint. Police say Payne held about 15 people hostage in an employee breakroom no one was injured in the attack.

Payne's charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill and manufacturing a weapon of mass destruction. He's due in court again on April 14th.

Original Story:

Customers inside Jacksonville’s newest Wal-Mart took off running for their lives early this morning in what officers called a scene of chaos.

Just after 2:30, several 911 calls started pouring in to police about shots being fired inside the store on Yopp Road.

Once on the scene, they heard more gunfire.

Police swat teams, the Onslow County Sheriff’s Office along with the Highway Patrol entered the store, located and arrested 18 year old Elijah Payne, a Wal-Mart Employee, on duty at the time of incident.

Officers say Payne went out on a break, retrieved a pump shotgun from the vehicle he drove to work, painted his face black to camouflage himself and re-entered the store.

Police say he walked into the employee lounge area and held a few of them there at gunpoint.

Jacksonville police say another employee struggled with Payne and got the gun out his hand, saving the lives of those inside the store and also being held against their will.

Payne is in jail charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, kidnapping and discharging a firearm into occupied property.

Payne is under a $75,000 bond.

Who is going to tell Elijah's story? It's obvious that the media is not giving the whole truth and neither do they care. You are only reporting what is fed to you by feeding sources. Why not do some real reporting and find out the particular's of the incident rather than your spoon fed stories. I would like to hear something on his background and how those who feel superior teased him his whole young life. Whether we want to admit it or not he is just a product of this cruel society. Who cares right? We have a story that pays our salaries. The monster we make him out to be. This was not the act of someone who wanted to kill but someone who wants people to leave him alone. Don't you think with a shotgun he could have shot someone if he wanted to? Let's not give him a excuse for his actions but a little understanding of why he may have done this. Some things are being swept under the rug like the whole truth.

How long can you deny the involvement you had with "Lerch" and whatever else you called him. This young 18 year old kid was a victim of your cruelty towards him. You think with all the adults on his shift they would have tried to lift this boy up instead of crucifying him with the hateful cruelty he endured. I have just recently found out he was a victim at his school, too, with same behavior of name calling, but you would think with Wal*Mart's anti-discrimination policy he would have been protected. Not so! Let's keep all this under raps so that we let Elijah look like the Manson and we look like the victims. The practice of tormenting people who don't look exactly like we think they should is the type discrimination that goes on under our noses everyday. Had the Supervisors adhered to Wal*Mart's policy it might not have happened at all.

This is heartbreaking. I am concerned for our children because it is them who are going to have to deal with this stuff everyday. Our government needs to wake up and make punishments harder. This is why this is happening all the time. Criminals know they can get away with it. My heart goes out to all the employees and to Walmart.

Are you guys just ignorent? Your worried about what he looks like? I worked with him at the store and was there that night. He before this was a very nice guy. I for one didnt see this comming. i would have never expected it from him. If you didnt know him dont make judgements based on looks. As for walmart, they ran a background check on him,and it came back clean. true he was 18 and that isnt long to aquire any records.Walmart has been very supportive of all of us, they have given us access to 24/7 councling and days off if we need it. This is an awful situation that unfortunitly no one seen comming. alot of people where hurt in this emotionaly. Trust me when i say I think emotional wounds are worse. people tend to pass of whats in your head as being "Dramatic" or taking advantage of the situation. I only wish that was true with what i myself am going thru. Atleast then it would make some sence.

THis is another example of places employing people just not knowing or screening just how stable they are. If you look at any place of employment, and i am a teacher, there are various processes to hiring. I can't believe there is only 75,000 for the bond. he is dangerous and i hope he doesn't get out anytime soon. the people involved were tramatized, my prayers are with you all...God bless...

Posted by: queenb Location: jacksonville on Mar 25, 2008 at 12:27 AM
i cant believe that they would put his bond so low?? he shouldnt even have had a bond. there are alot of crazy people these days. u dont know who to trust. u cant even go to work or even live ur daily life without watching ur back. also to all the people who has something to say about walmart; i am a walmart employee. walmart has to go on with their just like u have to go on with ur life in any situation. if we didnt feel comfortable workin that day we didnt have to go and still got paid. it was our choice to still work. i would quit walmart b/c of this incident. this could have happened anytime and anywhere, but if i was there when it happened then that would be a different story. something like this could have a life affect on u. im sorry that others had to go thru this but i just thank god that i wasnt at work or in that break room. if im not mistaken something is wrong with him anyway

First of all Wal-Mart does have programs and people in place to deal with these types of situations. Secondly why are so many people (not all) so quick to blame WalMart? This person is and was from your community, hmmmm think about that for a minute. WalMart does not hire people from third world countries, they hire people from you community that need a job, so how are they in the wrong? Take a look at the Jacksonville Mall and see how many CCTV cameras you see on the roof, then go to Walmart and see how many you see, then tell me WalMart doesn't care. WalMart is no different than Microsoft, everyone picks on the big guys. QUIT CRYING!!!!!!!!!!

You cannot feel safe just going out shopping anymore. Not just WalMart, but also malls, etc. What a pitiful society we have become. Not feeling safe on the streets has made me sort of a recluse. Only to work, shopping when just necessary. The days of strolling downtown to check out the shops, or lounging in the mall are over for me. Dont forget to lock your car doors too!

the court system's are so screwed up. a drug dealer would get more bond than this scum bag. way to many sick people in this world......

Posted by: Anonymous on Mar 24, 2008 at 02:51 PM
what is it about walmart it seems that more and more violance is happening in wal-mart stores. To me it is a problem people cant even go shopping anymore with out watching their back. This man needs to be in jail along time. What was his motive for this stupid act? Stop the madness people.

Sorry to say, but it's not just Wal-mart where crimes are being committed. The truth is, you never know what people are thinking nowadays. The same thing could happen in your home. It's ok to be afraid, just pray, ask god to protect you regardless of where you go.

I am a Walmart employee of this store....and to you who posted about walmart being greedy...that couldn't be farther from the truth.....we were told that any employee who did not feel comfortable about comining in for their shift that day did not have to...and we would still recieve the pay for that day...that seems pretty ungreedy to me...i love my job and i couldnt ask for a better group of supervisors......this was a very misfortunate event and i thank the lord no one was injured.......you can not blame walmart for an individuals conduct...any more than u can blame a victim for their attacker....walmart was victimized here too.....but everyone is so quick to put the blame on a big company rather than just hold the sick individual accountable for thier OWN actions.....

It is sad to see what is happening everywhere in the world. People don't take life of any value. It is terrible that this has happened in our town as well as our country. Things of this nature seems to be happening way to often. I thank God he didn't kill anyone. This could have been a lot worse thank God no one was killed. Prayers go out for all the incidents like this, and pray to have a community with peace.

It's unbelievable how some of you (adults) make jokes about a crime as serious as this one. When something like this happens it puts everyone at risk. Stop making little comments about the NAACP because it is senseless. We're all at risk, it doesn't matter what race you are. Lets do something together, "pray" that things get better. It's obvious that something is wrong with the young man. PRAY for him.....

For some of the people making jokes about the guy, I see no humor in this horrific incident that could have been much worse..we should pray that there are no sick copycats..hopefully he will not be released.

75,000 dollars bond? Should be NO bond! Now we're going to hear from the anti gun people about people not being punished for using guns. The person setting this bond should be FIRED!

Posted by: Patrick Location: Jacksonville on Mar 24, 2008 at 08:21 AM
A 75 thousand bond...that's all he gets for attempt of murder? He needs alot more than that. Why don't we try...Prison without parole. Just as a start.

This guy is released on bond? Close the border this cat looks like a runner.

Posted by: greed Location: jacksonville on Mar 24, 2008 at 01:03 AM
I want to know why walmart was open hours after this happened. Why make the employee's that are scared out of there minds carry on like nothing happened. Walmart needs to provide some type of help for there employee's. This is just sad that they have to be that greedy

Posted by: incredulous Location: greenville on Mar 23, 2008 at 11:16 PM
Okay someone has to say it - it's really Lurch from the Adam's Family show right? This guy is why some people should practice better birth control!!!

The employee that took the gun away is a true hero. This young man could have killed many people. I believe his bond should have been much higher. It is sad that we are no longer safe shopping in a store nowadays. I pray that as parents we will wake up and realize what our youth are doing to themselves and step up and be the best parents we can be. We all need to have God in our lives instead of trying to keep him out of everything. That is what has got us into this mess we are in now.

Posted by: one2one Location: greenville,nc on Mar 23, 2008 at 11:00 PM
its a good thing there was a quick thinking employee on shift.you couldn't get me to go inside a walmart or in their parking lot if they were giving away free stuff.this is the world we live in and what is to say if the employee had not been quick on his feet there would be the national news parked in the lot and saying something about a mass murder.Wal Mart clean up your store with this crime and the crime here in greenville you should take heed

Posted by: Anonymous Location: nc on Mar 23, 2008 at 09:47 PM
attempted murder; only brings 75 thousand bond???? are you serious... WOW!!!

Posted by: angela Location: rocky mount on Mar 23, 2008 at 09:12 PM
what in the world was he thinking about? His bond should've been more than 75 thousand dollars! They should've whip him inside the store...teach him a lesson!

Posted by: John Location: Greenville on Mar 23, 2008 at 08:54 PM
This guy is under BOND!? Are you kidding me?! He goes into a store and attempts to kill people en masse and has the chance of temporarily being released? I just can't believe this.

Posted by: Dennis Location: Chocowinity on Mar 23, 2008 at 08:20 PM
Who would give this punk bond. People when you have the option to vote during any election do so wisely.

If you have a urge to kill, why don't you go to the nearest recruiting center and sign up for a free plane or boat ride to Iraq or someplace close to it???

DO WE EVEN NEED TO WAST TIME ON THIS ONE. THIS IS ONE EXAMPLE OF WHAT THE DEATH PENALTY IS FOR.
