Hyde County residents continue to struggle to find work. The county has the highest unemployment rate in the entire sate.
In January the unemployment rate was 11.1 percent. That's up from December's rate of 8.7%. Hyde County Economic Developers say the highest unemployment rates are typically in January and February due to the seasonal work which includes crabbing, fishing, logging, and farming. The high rates continue to be a concern for many local residents, especially those who have been forced to close up shop.
Economic developers say they are encouraging people bring business into the county for now they primarily rely on the local prison, bank, and Rose Akers for employment.
