A rural route mail carrier in Pennsylvania was trapped inside her car for almost two hours as dogs attacked her tires, flattening three of them.

The dogs not only attacked the mail Jeep but also the police car that responded to help.

Robin Barton was delivering a package to a Hanover home last week when she found herself face to face with a Rottweiler and Pit Bull. Barton gave the dogs a taste of pepper spray, but the animals would not back off.

Instead, they started biting the tires of her Jeep. The police came, and the dogs started to chew on the tires of the police car. As officers got ready to tranquilize the dogs, the owner came home and the dogs calmed down.

The owner thinks the dogs attacked the tires because she recently bought chew toys that look like a tire. She bought the mail carrier three new tires, and the carrier is back on her route.

You hit the nail on the head. I agree with every word....this day and time we have to have protection because of the useless crackheads that had rather kill and steal than work to supply their habbits. I have a pit and doberman we have breakins all around my neighborhood EXCEPT my house and my neighbor's house and my neighbor has thanked me often for having the dogs.

i have several dogs/a rott is one of them/my smaller dogs are more aggressive than the rott/he is 140 lbs of baby/my dogs do have about 3 acres they roam on but it is fenced in/no one can come in my yard as all the dogs greet them and i'm sure they may bite/all i ask is someone call be before they come and i'll be glad to put them up/with our economy as it is now and all the crackheads and just plain lazy folks who would rather steal than work i'll take my dogs any day and put up with folks who dont share my attitude/i love company and all it takes it a phone call

My friend had a rotti/lab mix that would attack tires but only because he wanted to ride. Trust me we know this for a fact cause he would only bite my friends tires. He was very protective though. My dog is a decendent of this dog, she hates drunks and she hates aggressive people. She has been known to chase only these type of people but yet she is a lover if you approach her in the right manner. Kids dont bother her, adults dont bother her. Show up here drunk or acting aggresive and she is bothered. She treed a drunk one day. Who knows why? I have raised her from a pup cause her mother could not feed her. She has never been abused. But then again her daddy could be the same way as he got closer to the end. So stop bashing pitts. It is not about breed. It is about rasing them. If you raise a dog right with enough disipline and enough love they will only attack to protect. I had a Saint Bernard that would attack at no notice but he was abused, so go figure. Some dog just need love

Have you ever been bitten by a pomerian I had one that bit someone and he had to have stitches. He was provoked. My english bull dog is a big baby. Guess what she attacks the trash truck, bites the tires, because the trash man hit her with a stick. My brother has a boxer pit mix he is a big baby the mail carrier fed him dog treats all the time he would meet the mail truck. Guess what subsitute mail carrier spayed the dog with mace when he went out to greet her. Any dog will attack when provoked poodle, pom, beagle it does not matter. Dogs are not bad the people that raise them are. Have had many different dogs bulldogs, shepards, labs, rottweiler, chows, poms etc the only one to ever bite someone was the pomeranian and he was provoked.

Us women have to protect ourselves. And I am glad its not up to you. My Babies are real friendly. But any dogs can attack if provoked. My little rat terrier would probably attack u before my apbt. What are you going to do shoot it too? Cruel and mean people.

I speak very highly of the american pit bull terrior... not it's mixed bred, inbred spawn. and those who inbreed these beautiful animals and/or turn them towards aggression should be ashamed of themselves. this breed should have been left to it's original nature, before criminals began to change them. shame on them for giving this animal this horrible reputation, and leaving them to ridicule on blogs such as this. i should wave my american pit bull terrier flag.

The dogs in question make up a small percentage of the total dog population, but account for 74% of attacks(regardless of the reason). Taking into account the number of attacks committed by the rest of the breeds that make up the dog population, and are also mistreated, this is a staggering difference which still supports the fact that these animals are more visous, more dangerous, and more likely to attack at any given moment than any other breed. If you want to dispute these facts or think they're wrong, just contact the individual who collected the data. Earlier post tells you right where to go to see the results and the individual that did the data collecting.

Well, enough nonsense, it's not up to you or law enforcement, so I guess you will still be seeing them around a LOT. And when I say provoked, um let's think of what that means, I'm speaking of dogs who are trained to fight to be agressive, humans have had a lot to do with it. think about that.

thank you for your info animal control officer! us APBT, Rottweiler, Doberman, etc. breed owners needed some help here! i knew the lab was the most likely to bite... i'm glad someone mentioned it!

let's look at a few more things... it is a fact that 82.5% of the APBT's that took the temperament test by the american canine testing association passed! compared to a 77% passing rate of all breeds on average. APBT's are ranked number 4 (4th highest for gentle temperament) out of 122 breeds of dog tested for temperament! This breed of dog is loyal, intelligent, courageous and easy to train. unfortunatley people are taking advantage of these qualities and creating monsters. oh yeah.. and for every "pit bull" that kills, there are 10.5 million that don't! take into considertation how popular this "breed" is and how many there are and maybe you would understand why the stats are so high. the more you have of something, the more you hear about it! check out this site thetruthaboutpitbulls.com that's where i get alot of info... and i read books on the breed too! shed some light on these haters! know the breed before you judge!! this goes for rotties too! bless the breed!

facts... an American Pit Bull Terrier is the least likely breed of dog to attack.. if they are properly trained and properly bred. Any owner can win the love and obedience of a puppy if they teach them and train them appropriately. There is no such thing as a "pit bull". that slang is given to any dog that is a poorly bred "fighting dog". American Pit Bull Terriers are kind! gentle! dogs who obey and adore their owners. they are extremely! gentle with children. Unfortunately the wrong people learned of their obedience and eagerness to please and began breeding for the wrong reasons; mixing their blood lines and breeding too close. It is unfair to those of us who have the proper breed of dog to hear these horrible comments pertaining to banning the breed. i say it over and over again! dogs who are bred too closely, have an APBT mix in them, and who are taught to be vicious bear the name of the "pit bull" and they are not! "pit bull" is not a breed!!! thanks.

Any dog has the potential to be vicious and dangerous...even cute little Shih Tzus. The number one dog reported for biting causing injuries warranting medical attention is the lab...not pitts, rotties or dobies. Shall we now get on the band wagon to ban labs? Each incident is unique unto itself and needs to be dealt with as such by enforcement officers trained to investigate the situation. Wanting to destroy a dog because of it's breed kind of ranks up there with wanting to exterminate humans because of thier ethnicity...hints of Hitler here people...is that what this country is truly about? Hamsters and gerbils give serious bites too, as can cats...shall we ban them all as well?

dogbitelaw.com....that's where these statistics are coming from... only problem is you don't know the history of the dog or situation that these statistics are coming from. it is unfair, but alot of people get these breeds of dog and teach them to be fierce. it is unfortunate for their reputations.

Just make owners totally responsible for the actions of their pets. If a dog kills someone, then charge the owner with manslaughter. If a dog maims someone, charge the owner with careless and reckless endangerment and make them responsible for medical bills. I believe this would promote responsible pet ownership.

to ilovepitbulls: You tell me how is it that these mutts are provoked by someone attempting to do their job. That statement made absolutely no sense whatsoever. No not all pits, rots, or other dogs of thatose breeds are bad, but the ones thaat are need to be put sleep and the owners be levied with stiff fines for pets that attack others. In some states in the US, if a pet attacks and injures or kills someone due to owner negligence, the owner can be charged with felonious assault inflicting injury or murder if the person(s) attacked are killed. Think about it

Let's look at some facts pulled from an actual study. Pit bulls, Rottweilers, Presa Canarios and their mixes are responsible for 74% of attacks on people. 68% of the attacks upon children, 82% of the attacks upon adults, 65% of the deaths, and 68% of the maimings. In more than two-thirds of the cases included in the study, the life-threatening or fatal attack was the first known dangerous behavior by the animal in question. These are facts and not excuses, which once again is all we're hearing from most of you.

These dogs should be put down immediately! There is no reason what so ever for anyone to make their dogs that aggressive. I can understand wanting a good watch dog because Lord knows we need them in our homes these days but for a dog to be mean enough to chew car tires flat should be considered animal abuse. There is no hope for these dogs and the owners should pay dearly... The problem is, those ignorant dog owners dont realize what kind of danger they are putting innocent passerbys in. What if that was a child riding a bicycle? Why didnt the mail carrier just drive away or run over the dogs. I on the other hand, would never deliver to that house again. If they wanted their mail, they could make the long trip to town and get it.

LETS BAN ANYTHING THAT IS HARMFUL TO PEOPLE, FROM BEING IN THE US....oops that would leave the US empty because PEOPLE do MORE HARM To other peole than ANIMALS....Look at the small helpless children that are abused, raped and killed BY HUMANS...children killing parents...crackheads killing for money and humans that kill other humans just for the thrill of it....now who is more dangerous.. If it had been me the owner would be without her dogs today. I would have put them down for good. These type of pets need to be inside the confines of a sizeable steel fence that is tall enough to prevent them from escaping, and kept on a solid chain when being walked in communities with muzzles on so if they get loose they can't harm anyone

i almost got attacked by a feist last night... we must ban them from the US!.... i got a new pit bull puppy two weeks ago.. he's so handsome and SWEET. he loves to play with my OTHER pit bull and my CAT. they lay and sleep together... everyone should have one! I can't wait to get my doberman puppy :)

Yes these animals can become deadly in an instant without provocation.....so can humans....look at the murders we have now just because someone doesn't like the way another person looks at them...read the news about the children killing their parents for ungodly reasons....should we give all male babies a vasectomy when born so they can't reproduce visious killers or maybe we could just outlaw them from living in the US.

Dog specific banning does not work, by the time that was in place all breeds and mixed breeds would have to be banned. My concern is why were the animals loose when the owner was not home....all dogs, large or small, must be under the care and control of the owner at all times. It is apparant these two weren't. They seem to fall under the guidelines of either dangerous dog ordinance or vicious dog ordinance...two different classifications in most jurisdictions. The owner did right by replacing the tires, now what are they going to do to prevent this from happening again....and yes, it could be a child on a bicycle.

I have some pitbulls, all chained up and fenced in. I have them for my safety though. People are so mean now, so they let me know what is out there. They are friendly, but i dont let them loose or people back there. These dogs are my kids. Yes, Pit bulls have a bad name, but so do a lot of humans.

why were these vicious animals on the loose? the office should've charged the owners for the attack. Luckly she (carrier) was in the jeep and not out walking. If these dogs are attacking large tires and mistaken them for toys I see this as a serious problem!

Fact:Pit bulls account for 1% of the dog population in the U.S. and are responsible for more than 50% of fatal attacks in the U.S. Do the math and save your appologies for the individuals that get their faces ripped off by these dogs. You people can make all the lame excuses you want but the PROVEN fact is, these animals can become deadly in an instant without provocation.

This sounds to much like the movie Cujo. And that's my Pit Bull's name, but he is the complete opposite of the dog in that movie and in this article. I still disagree that they should be banned, sorry Brad, from the previous dog chews off man's 4 toes. However, I feel if a dog is agressive the owner needs to have them restrained. And what kind of chew toys did you buy for the dog for them to mistake them as tires? Now I've seen some people actually give tires to Pit Bulls and other big dogs to chew on, I don't but I have seen it.
