WITN News has confirmed that missing Marine Maria Lauterbach bought a bus ticket on the day she was last seen.

Sheriff Ed Brown says the ticket, from Jacksonville to El Paso, was never used. Lauterbach's car was found at the bus station parking lot on Monday and Brown says bus station employees now say that car had been there since December 15th.

Also, the sheriff says Lauterbach's bank card was used at an ATM at the Jacksonville Wal-Mart on December 24th.

Brown says Lauterbach is dead and her body buried in Onslow County. He said that information came in overnight from a person he called a key witness to the crime.

The suspect in her disappearance is the man who was accused of sexually assaulting the Marine. Brown says a nationwide alert has been put out for Corporal Cesar Armando Lauren.

Earlier today Brown appeared on the Today Show, answering questions from Matt Lauer in a live interview. Lauer asked the questions from the Today Show studio in New York City via satellite to Brown in Jacksonville.

Lauer asked Sheriff Brown to elaborate on a comment Brown made during a press conference in Jacksonville Thursday. Lauer read Brown's quote verbatim: "Sometimes people do things, if they could turn the clock back, they wouldn't do them they way they've done them." Brown replied that he has not indicated whether he personally believes Lauterbach disappeared of her own accord or otherwise.

Lauer also reviewed information released about Lauterbach's mental state, including her family's claim that she has a "history of being compulsive lying" and may be bipolar. Brown replied that he has never met the missing Marine, and as a policy does not comment on such matters of those he has never met.

Sheriff Brown indicated in the interview on Today that he would be interviewing the Lauterbach's roommate soon, if not Friday morning, before a major press release scheduled for noon. Brown says Durham was being flown from California where he was deployed for training back to North Carolina. Brown says he's hopeful Sgt. Durham can shed some light on the mysterious disappearance. Durham is believed to be the last person to speak with the missing Marine.

Before concluding the interview, Lauer asked Brown if he thinks it is likely Lauterbach will turn up alive. Brown replied that the "needle is pointing more on the positive side."

Thursday night on WITN News at 5, Sheriff Brown defended his department's handling of the missing person case. To see that live interview click on the link at the top of this story.

Earlier in the day, WITN obtained documents that say Lauterbach's mother told investigators her daughter claimed she was raped by a senior officer in her command at the base.

Authorities have said Maria Lauterbach was the victim of a crime on the base, but would not say what that crime was.

At Thursday afternoon's news conference, Sheriff Brown said he would not address reports that Lauterbach was raped, saying that is being investigated by Camp Lejeune.

According to a sheriff's department investigation report, Lauterbach's mother says she had a firm conservation with her daughter, telling her she should give up the baby when born, telling the Marine she would not be able to care for the baby. The mother also told investigators her daughter had a history of being a compulsive liar.

The sheriff's report indicates the mother said her daughter had been receiving some threats to her military career from the man accused of sexually assaulting her.

Sheriff Believes Answer Is Near To Case

Onslow County Sheriff Ed Brown says he does believe the answer is near to what happened to a missing Camp Lejeune Marine who is 9 months pregnant.

Lance Corporal Maria Lauterbach was reported missing December 19th. Her mother says her due date is this coming Tuesday.

This morning Brown says at this time he is not 100% resolved to which way this investigation may go, The sheriff says open leads are still being investigated and more witnesses are being developed and interviewed.

Last night the sheriff's office met with Camp Lejeune's commander and N.C.I.S. to request her roommate, who is deployed to California, be returned to Jacksonville to be interviewed. The sheriff describes the relationship between Lauterbach and the male Marine as "close".

Mother Makes Plea

The mother of a missing Camp Lejeune Marine makes a plea for her daughter and grandchild's safe return, while lawmen explain why there was a delay in reporting her disappearance.

Mary Lauterbach says it's just not like her daughter Marie not to call home several times a day.

Lance Corporal Marie Lauterbach has now been missing for three weeks.

The Marine lance corporal was listed by police as missing on December 19th, but the Onslow County Sheriff's Department didn't go public with the case until Tuesday.

Wednesday night Sheriff Ed Brown told WITN they held off going public until their investigation revealed suspicious activity in the disappearance case.

The mother said Wednesday she just wants to see her daughter again and hopes that the baby is healthy. The missing Marine's due date is next Tuesday.

Mary Lauterbach says her daughter has had a difficult pregnancy. She last talked to her on December 14th about plans for the mother to visit Jacksonville for the holidays. The mother says later that day Marie's roommate called and said something was wrong and the Marine was gone.

Lauterbach, who lives outside of Dayton, Ohio describes her daughter as a loner, but very attached to family and friends.

Previous Story

Authorities now say a missing Camp Lejeune Marine was the victim of a crime that she was set to testify about.

Lance Corporal Maria Lauterbach was eight months pregnant when her mother reported her missing three weeks ago today.

Onslow County Sheriff Ed Brown says they are very concerned about Lauterbach, especially since she would telephone her family in Ohio several times a week.

Brown told WITN Wednesday that there has also been suspicious activity on the Marine's bank account.

Her mother told detectives that her daughter was a witness to an incident that occurred on Camp Lejeune and was supposed to testify in the case. The State Bureau of Investigation and the Navy Criminal Investigative Service have been called in to help with the investigation.

Sheriff Brown said Tuesday there was a delay from when the mother first reported her missing and making the public plea because they were unsure if the Marine had been on leave over the Christmas holidays.

Monday night they found Lauterbach's car at the Jacksonville bus station and her cell phone near Camp Lejeune's main gate..

Deputies tell WITN News they have searched her house and talked to her roommates. Investigators are not saying much about the father of the missing woman's expected child, but do say they have several persons of interest.

The sheriff said he now believes Lauterbach has either had her baby, or is overdue.

Lance Corporal Lauterbach joined the Marine Corps June 6, 2006. She has never been deployed. She currently is assigned to the Group Consolidated Administration Center, which is part of the 2nd Marine Logistics Group.

Lauterbach is originally from Dayton, Ohio. Her family there has set up a page on the web site Facebook in hopes of locating the missing Marine.

My heart goes out to all of Maria's family members at this time of sorrow. I will keep you all in my prayers. All you can do from here on out is replay all those special moments and keep those memories very close to you hearts. You know that she is in a happy place. As for Corporal Cesar Armando Lauren, I hope to God that he doesn't ever get a chance when the officials get ahold of him. Maria and mostly her unborn child never had a a chance due to someone being so selfish. My heart goes out to you all and just try to keep you heads up for her. God Bless.

My heart goes out to the family and loved one of Maria Lauterbach. It really bothers me that her mental status is being called in to question. Regardless if she had bipolar or not she definitely did not burn herself up and it is really not fair to down grade her or her memory when she can not defend herself.

You would think as much as they are able to put into marines heads they would teach them things like this were wrong . Part of the is caused by the Corps saying that they support family yet allowing men to get away with adultry . I can say this because I went through it. I put all my prayers and thoughts to Maria Lauterbach and her unborn child and hope that Corporal Cesar Armando Lauren is made to pay dearly for what he has done I also put my thoughts and prayers to his child because they will have to live with what he did for the rest of there life. Its really sad that a mother and child had to loose there life for attention to be brought to these types of things. North Carolina should have a law for the unborn child how can something with a heart beat and feelings not have any rights it just doesnt make any sense thats like saying a newborn has none either. I just pray that nothing like this happens again and that the Corps takes there part of blame for not teaching them better .

My heartfelt condolences go out to this Marine's family and friends.I know what they have been going thru.My daughter and her friend have been missing from Beaufort Co. since last March. It is without a doubt the worst thing a family can go thru.I only hope that Maria's family can have some form of closure even though the ending was so tragic. It was hard for me to listen to the news, they found Maria's body on my daughters B-day.As for law enforcement...once being involved in the Criminal Justice field, had faith in the system and trusted they would do their job,but that has not been the case.I do not have all the facts on Maria's case so I won't comment on that but as for my daughter's case,I know for a fact that Local and State law enforcement dropped the ball. Its as if they didn't care or were too busy to worry about it.They form opinions that are not based on fact but are born of pure arrogance.Although it is too late for Maria,I still have hope it is not too late for my daughter.

What has been said about the roommates statement? I lost my 21 year old son just over a year ago,and Sheriff Brown may have not meant any harm for the information about the remains, but I think that was a very bad call. I have pictures of my son's accident from the State Trooper's office, and I have not looked at them yet,and don't know if I ever can.I'm a greiveing Mom,so I can relate some what, but I feel no 2 people are going to handle death the same.Every case is different, circumstanes are different, but I have a problem with the Mom(step Mom)stating that they had had a wonderful conversation, and she was in a good mood and exciting about her coming to visit.I'm not blaming her for what happened, but why did she lie at first?? I find it hard to ever call my child a liar, and bi-polar.If she felt that was needed to be known,"why" not just tell the authorities, not herself on public tv.My son's life was hard to loose, but I'm greatful God spared me the agony of this kinda death.

You know, it makes me sick that the comments "she was bipolar and a liar" were made. Even if she was either of those, does NOT mean she deserves to die! Neither does that poor child. Also to the person whos blog was on the news, hearing BOTH sides of the story, HOW can we hear BOTH sides, when one side can't speak. We are just supposed to believe what this man has to say. Since the other can't speak for herself, or her child can't speak for himself we are just supposed to believe whatever he says? SERIOUSLY? So if he says it was self defense (as most people would say that are guilty and obviously dont have aheart or consious) we are just supposed to believe that? Absolutly insane, he represents our country and he did this? I myself, could care less WHAT he has to say!!!

I've been following this case since I heard about it. I cannot believe a red flag wasn't raised on the 17th when she failed to report for work after the weekend and didn't show up. Again, she was 8 months pregnant, so someone should have been making some inquires to her where abouts. Possibly calling hospitals for starters. Another thing I've been wondering about is the bus ticket to El Paso, TX. I would have thought she may have told coworkers or at least her immediate supervisor about her travel plans. Personally, I would have been concerned knowing she wanted to travel by bus in her condition. I didn't think she was on leave because the article stated her mother planned on visiting her daughter for the holidays. I hope more facts come out about this case soon. My thoughts and prayers go out to Maria and her entire family. "Semper Fi"

I wonder how her mom feels. While she was calling her daughter a liar and unfit mother she was buried in a shallow grave.

IS THERE A PUBLIC MEMORIAL OR GATHERING IN MARIA's HONOR PLANNED? One persons comments may be disregarded but a multitude will surely get the attention this case deserves. Nothing in this case is acceptable and there are other victims that may suffer the same fate if something isn't done to improve MC and Onslow County procedures. Maybe if enough show their support and stand up on her behalf that something will be done to prevent further tragedies. I call for all those that want to see change show up at the Onslow County court house at sundown to pay their respects and join hands in a peaceful combined effort to improve victims rights. I hope all media will announce this so that more are informed and will attend.

some day the military will stop covering up for there own and let them pay for there actions. They need to work with the civilians and let there own pay for there actions. Interesting question here is where is the wife of the suspect? How can something go down in your house and you know nothing? They seem to be leaving her out of all this. If the military would have acted on this asap the out come may be differant.Hard lesson learned but it will never change

There are several comments posted I don't agree on. For one the comment about their daughters joing the Marine Corps is wrong!!! The female Marines make their own lives it has nothing to do with the Marine Corps. Second Sherriff Brown worked his heart out to find LCpl Lauterbach and by the news even if he got the call sooner it was still too late. I do agree that the previous incidents would of granted probable cause for a warrant to bring the man to the station. An intergation could of made him crack. Shame on him for the things he done and the worst part is he is probably still in Jacksonville because you can pass by a Marine and not even know that they are wanted day in and out. My prayers to LCpl Lauterbach's family. Stay strong. The story will unfold and the crimes that were commited will be brought to justice. Lastly, shame on the persons in the Marines , this is another horrible incident were the Marines were not taking care of one another..were did the brotherhood go?

Posted by: KB Location: Jacksonville on Jan 12, 2008 at 10:21 AM
You bash the Corps for basically screwing over women, yet it happens on a daily basis in the real world but no one complains about that. And as coming from someone who was date raped in college...it's also idiotic that as soon as a female says she's raped everyone takes her side...when many women DO make it up. So again, how about you wait until some sort of evidence is given out in the open - so you actually have something to go off instead of hearsay.

Posted by: KB Location: Jacksonville on Jan 12, 2008 at 10:19 AM
Senior Officer and Cpl - HELLO maybe that's where he "lying"comes in to play. In official reports she said it was a senior officer but now reports are saying it was this Cpl...supposedly...since they don't even have evidence of that. I think it's absolutely ridiculous for any of you to pass judgement until ALL the evidence is released. I highly doubt most of you making comments on what should and shouldn't be done have backgrounds in criminal justice, etc...because you watch NCIS or CIS or Law and Order on TV doesn't mean you know how to properly handle someone's remains. I pray to God that this girl is still alive so some of you look like idiots for making such assumptions, especially when some media reports this and other media reports that and they end up being conflicting reports. By the way, as a Marine wife I know a good number of female Marines who LOVE the Corps and have never had a problem, which is stupid to make poor comments about the entire Corps.

I TO WOULD LIKE TO SHARE MY DEEPEST CONDOLANCES TO MARIA'S FAMILY,but i've got say that the usmc should have toke more action&that the ocsd should have went to that Boys home sooner.

First, my deepest sincerest condolances to Maria's family. I feel overly compelled to lash out in words towards the USMC and Onslow County Sheriff's Department -- but, it would be energy wasted. Some things just aren't worth it. If you've ever had any dealings with either entity (esp. if you are female with allegations against a male for any type abuse, you already know first hand how they run their show. HOW is it ACCEPTIBLE to let what probably are her blessed remains, REMAIN out in some firepit until morning when they know it's there??? To cover it up with tarps and place tents over??? ABSOLUTELY unsatisfactory -- ABSOLUTE COMPLETE DISRESPECT for a human life, a daughter, a sister... A MARINE. Thought you never left anyone behind, yet, just leave them out in the damp night ground for just "another" night. UGH.

If you go to msnbc.com they said that there was a burnth body found in the cpls back yard and that his wife was the witness thats crazy how they have that information but our crappy sheriff want comment on the witness .

I am kinda confused myself first off my husband is a marine at camp lejeune and I heard about this on myspace sunday night and I told my husband and he said he hadn't heard anything about it . Then I was readind up on the articles today I seen on the same site that Maria was possibly raped by the Cpl they are looking for and then I seen she was possibly raped by an officer . Which is it ? ANd we live on base and if they were really looking for this guy wouldn't they be checking ID's at the gate ?

Posted by: Teri Location: Houston on Jan 11, 2008 at 04:05 PM
I'm "Marci from Houston"'s mom, also, I agree w/Jacquelyn of S.C., though I've only HEARD that there are good superiors that treat their women respectfully. Unfortunately, the few that do get away w/it (as in what Marci personally experienced), get away w/ it big - they continue getting promoted while the one to lodge the complaint then gets harassed on a different level as well because they wouldn't succumb to sexual advances by their superiors. The Marine Corps is not a place for women because they DO leave their comrades behind, only its just the women because they cover up for the men if they have enough medals on their chest. Or, as we were told "He wouldn't do that, he is a hero and has many medals to prove it. Your daughter is only a lance corporal. Besides, he has a wife and 3 kids."

Posted by: Marci Location: Houston on Jan 11, 2008 at 03:55 PM
I would venture to say that the Marine Corps can expect a significant drop in females joining up. This story should be embedded into every mother's mind that has a daughter interested in the service. Also, this story should be used to teach sons how to respect a woman. Many military men have no clue how to treat a woman and it's sad. It's a direct reflection of their parenting...or lack of thereof. The Marine Corps preaches that we're all family. We watch out for eachother, well, the system failed Maria and her innocent little baby boy. It's sad that because she had only been in a year and a half, she was probably told she had no chance going up against an officer who probably had many awards, medals, and years under his belt. The Marine Corps has a way of making you feel like there's no hope. It's their way or no way. This man should be brought to justice and in a humiliating way. His face should be the new "sexual harrassment face" so even when he looks in the mirror he is shamed.

Posted by: anonymous Location: Illinois on Jan 11, 2008 at 02:26 PM
To Nicole: You are exactly correct about why are they not working together (Onslow County and NCIS). See my earlier comment (posted by anonymous, illinois). Same question we asked when my brother died and Onslow County messed everything up. Turns out that NCIS only assists upon request because it is Onslow County's jurisdiction (and I'll tell you that Onslow County is too arrogant to have any help except when it's just something they don't want to do). Wonder how this sherriff feels now after all the comments he made yesterday about the girl: "you just need a friend", "this needs to stop", she was a liar, etc, etc. Wonder if he really wanted to cry when he found out that they believe she is dead or did he want to cry because it is in the spotlight now how incompetent his office is? How can a suspect is a murder not be considered a flight risk? and get 8 hours head start before they realized he was missing? what a bunch of jokers this department is full of

why is this case just coming up? a pregnant woman who is close to her due date(which is now past due)is missing, and people want to use the excuse, "We're not sure if she was on holiday leave" u don't take that chance in a case like this where the mother is saying hey this ain't like my daughter to not call or come here for the holidays. Plus her cell phone was found and the care was found in 2 different places. and she was supposed to testify in that case. i believe it's not that hard to figure out at all that this seems like a cover up. anytime someone is reported missing you don't just blow it off and say hey they might be on vacation. you wouldn't say that if it was a 6 year old little girl so why say it for a grown woman who is pregnant?

Has anyone thought of contacting Sahar, in Savannah? This person commented she had seen Maria!

Posted by: Anonymous Location: Greenville, NC on Jan 11, 2008 at 06:59 AM
I find it hard to believe that the sheriff (an elected official) and Camp Lejuene would "drag their feet" in the investigation into the disappearance of an 8 month pregnant woman. The authorities probably have information of which the public isn't aware. Let's not jump to conclusions and accuse them of poor investigative efforts. Hold your judgements until all of the details surrounding the disappearance are known.

I can't believe they told the family not to come to North Carolina! That's their child. I wouldn't care what anybody said, I have a son, and if he was missing 3 days, I would be on the first plane out.

Posted by: anon Location: Jacksonville, NC on Jan 10, 2008 at 11:07 PM
Even though the Marine Corps did not say anything, doesn't mean they were not looking for her. I have noticed that they have been doing a lot more ID checks in order to get onto base than normal. Also, I just had a baby at the Naval Hospital and I had a difficult labor. Due to complications, my husband was required to stay at the hospital the entire time I was there. It took the Naval Hospital quite a while to contact his command to let them know, so Maria's command could have assumed that she might have given birth. Since she disappeared on a Friday it could have been assumed that she was in the hospital. The situation with UA does become more complicated with a pregnant marine.

Posted by: Sue Location: Washington, NC on Jan 10, 2008 at 09:32 PM
I seriously believe this girl is in hiding and I feel in my heart that the reason that it was not public sooner was because they felt that she had just "left town" or gone in hiding (overall that there was no foul play) - things are just fishy to me. Don't take me wrong... I do hope that she is found, and I REALLY hope that I am wrong... and that she's not just hiding out!

Posted by: anon Location: Washington State on Jan 10, 2008 at 07:34 PM
I recently gave birth to an unplanned child and gave her up for adoption, and I tell you if she were going to willingly endanger her chlid (like disappearing wihtout her cell phone) she would have done so sooner, not this late in the pregnancy.I think this has everything to do with her status as a victim/witness of a crime and I wonder who else has gone missing from the case...

Posted by: Pat Location: Jacksonville, NC on Jan 10, 2008 at 06:21 PM
If you have a pregnant female getting ready to testify against a senior officer which could end his career, why would you assume it was an unauthorized absense and keep it so hush, hush? That's wasting precious time. It's true that the USMC protects it's officers and keeps their indiscretions a big SECRET! I first heard of this story on CNN also. I think it's very inappropriate for the Mother to say Maria is a compulsive liar. That's irrelevant and inappropriate. The Mother seemed insincere and cold. I hope Maria and the baby are ok regardless to the circumstances and I hope this situation will help impose stiffer punishment to Marines who do the wrong thing regardless of rank!

A few thougths to add- As a retired Marine I can tell you the Corps does take this kind of stuff seriously. I'm at a loss as to what happened here. When I was active duty, once I foolishly make a remark about a female Marine when she was not in the room. It got back to her and I was investigated for sexual harrasment. (Luckily got off with a verbal reprimand and was able to retire) So, again, if things are reported, most commands worth their salt will take action. (In my case even over-reacted) I'm proud of my Corps and always will be, but it appears they stepped on it this time. It's a shame, all of our brave brothers and sisters fighting in harm's way overseas and this incident will tarnish all the good they are doing. Our prayers are with you, Maria.

First of all...Why isn't the Jacksonville law enforcement seemed more concerned or make any comments about the fact that there are another life at stake here. If this girl was due 2 days ago they be assuming that the baby is alive and therefore missing too? If this missing persons case is suspicious meaning kidnapping or homicide shouldn't there have been more coverage before now? Also, why aren't the military and local law working closely together to find them? Wouldn't it seem that 2 heads are better than 1 in a situation like this. By the comments from the press conference it seems as if the two agencies are hindering the investigation by not working together. I am extremely bothered that the press conference seemed so candid with laughing and joking. This is a serious situation and the statement "We care" did not seem genuine to me. What seems like suspicious activity is this investigation. Praying for her return seems like her only hope. May God help Maria and her baby!!!

NO DISRESPECT TO THE MOTHER... BUT FROM ONE MOTHER TO ANOTHER, ONE WHO'S DAUGHTER WAS ASSAULTED BY ANOTHER MARINE... YOU NEED TO GET AN ATTORNEY AND NOT SAY ANOTHER WORD TO ANY OF THE SHERIFF'S DEPT IN ONSLOW COUNTY WITHOUT THE ADVICE OF YOUR ATTORNEY...

I am a former Marine and I am ashamed of how this is all being handled by the military and civilian justice (or shall we say injustice) system. However, do not criticize all of the Corps for a obviously dirty command few. There are alot of good marines that love and care for their fellow marines. There are women who are harrassed but it is usually by a handful not ALL of the Corps. Point fingers at the people who are botching this case...not all who serve in the Corps. I applaud Maria for putting up charges against her attacker and I am sure it has been a long road since she reported it. However, Marine Corps or not this happens everyday in every city. It is not a "military" or "Marine Corps" thing. It is a sick and mentally unstable person thing and unfortunately we have people like that in all branches of the military just like we have them in the public abroad. I pray they find Maria and her baby alive and safe!! My prayers to her friends and all of her family also. God Bless them!

I echo Melonie's words---I live here and the first I heard of this was via Nancy Grace's show last night. The USMC is notorious for covering up 'things' that happen on base as to not tarnish their good name. It's ridiculous that it has taken three weeks for this come out! Someone needs to be held accountable. I pray that Maria is found safe and her baby is okay.

Posted by: Jamie Location: Jacksonville, NC on Jan 10, 2008 at 11:48 AM
This is total incompetance on every level. It does not take three weeks for the Marines to look through leave papers. This is a sorry excuse to make up for this not being reported to the public sooner. I'm a resident of Jacksonville, NC, and this was just released on Monday. People here are outraged. Time is critical in any missing persons case. Local law enforcement hasn't just wasted hours, but weeks. This time is crucial in finding her. Still, they still haven't even spoken with all the "persons of interest". Are they really going to focus on her deployed male roommate? Perhaps they should spend their energy investigating those in the United States. Maria, our thoughts and prayers are with you. I hope they find you soon.

Posted by: Jack Location: Dayton on Jan 10, 2008 at 11:12 AM
After knowing about the "facts" in this case and reading the previous posts (Marci-Houston, anonymous-Illinois, etc) about inaction / mishandling by the Onslow County Sheriff's dept it becomes obvious this law enforcement office should be investigated by the state police, Attorney General, or whoever handles this kind of investigation. This case should be handled by a more competant law enforcement agency. I don't care about jurisdiction or "stepping on someones toes" because it needs to be determined what happened here.....and soon!

Statistics and the norm is very monotonous to this perversed nation. People have no more love for people and feel the need to take another person's life into their hands. Sad to hear about this situation two lives missing over one convoluted mind. I pray that God covers this young lady and or brings justice on her and the childs behalf in the name of JESUS.

THE INCREASING NUMBER OF PREGNANT&MISSING WOMAN, BECOMING 1 OF THE MOST TRAGIC LOSSES A FAMILY CAN SUFFER, UNFORTUNATLY HAS INCREASED OVER THE YEARS, AS ALL BUT 3(?)STATES HAVE MANDATORY CHILD SUPPORT AND ENFORCEMENT SERVICES THAT MAKE IT IMPOSSIBLE TO LEGALLY OWN OR OPERATE A VEHICLE,IF THEY DONT PAY CHILD SUPPORT. EVEN IF THE MOTHER WONT APPLY, OR NO MARRIAGE TAKES PLACE, MEN ARE WELL AWARE,leaving town or claiming,"it aint mine",IS NO LONGER A POSSIBILITY, AND IF THE WOMAN KNEW HIS NAME, THEY WILL BE FINANCIALLY RESPONSIBLE,(POSSIBLY FOR 18YRS)OR FACE JAIL TIME, FOR THAT 1 SELF-CENTERED "MOMENT"! SOME MEN VIEW THIS AS A"life destroying event" &JUSTIFY ELIMINATATING THAT POSSIBILITY AS "self defense"! IM SURE THAT WILL BE THE ROAD THE MILITARY&SHERIFF WILL LEAD EVERYONE BUT THIS IS CASE IS MORE ABOUT THE TESTMONY SHE WAS TO PROVIDE, SO OBVIOUS NOW, BY NUMEROUS OBSTRUCTIONS&FAILURES TO FOLLOW MILITARY&LEGAL PROCEEDURES THE TESTIMONY COVERUP!

What is the deal in Jacksonville, NC? Would an investigation have interfered w/ their ( Co. police) Christmas holidays? What do they (Onslow Co. police) think her Mother and family was going through during the holidays? I bet it wasn't a good Christmas for them. I have 5 children and 8 grandchildren and I can't imagine what they are going through. I talked to some of my friends who live in Jacksonville and until I contacted them, they didn't know a thing!!! Maybe all concerned should get Nancy Grace in on this. Bet she would light a fire under that police dept. The young lady would have to have been AWOL before the Marine Corp would have gotten into it. Also her Mother reported this to the local sheriff's office and they sat on it. They could have gotten info from the Marines and got a # or address for her while she was on leave because last I heard you had to give # and address while on leave in case of an emergency. To her family,if there is anything or way I can help pls. contact

Okay...I am a former female Marine. Just got out this past October after 5 years. So I was NJP'd TWICE for "Unauthorized Absence" for being minutes, again MINUTES, late to work. Why the heck has the Marine Corps not done anything about this sooner? Sometimes I question if I should reenlist but after reading this, it reminds me of the sexual harrassment I endured almost everyday from sick male Marines and the lack of the higher ups to care to do anything about it. Shame on the Marine Corps for not coming out with her not being to work on time December 14 or the following Monday, the 17th. They keep track of leave papers so she obviously wasn't on leave. And I've personally dealt with Onslow County Sherrifs Department as well and think they're a joke. Jones County Sheriff's Department should take over. Seriously. They at least know how to find someone and punish them for their crimes. Thank you Officer Houston. I hope Maria and baby are found safe & the Marine Corps dealt with.

I Hope and pray that this young lady and baby is found alive and well... The Marines as well as the civil authorities should be taken to task for lack of caring

I watch the news, we have friends that are sherrifs ( some work w/ hubby) and yet.NOTHING.. I agree..Definately foul play here. SHAME ON OUR LAW ENFORCEMENT!!! To the family: If you need anything..please write back. Being a mother myself,I cannot imagine having a child missing ..especially this long.My heart aches for you all involved.

I'll not tell any of my loved ones to sign up for the Marines, esp. if they don't care any more than this about their own. I think it's their responsibility to protect their soldiers, as much as is possible, and jump on the situation asap when one happens. I refuse to jump to conclusions about the father of the baby. Right now, I'd just like to know why the public was not informed sooner. Is the Marine Corp. embarrassed? I notified Fox News at 5:05 this morning. Let's all do what we can for these folks. I am a mother of three girls. I can't imagine having one of them missing. I am praying for the family and Maria. I know the family is frantic and just about out of their minds with worry. God be with them.

Women in the U.S. military are more and more frequently the vicitims of abuse, threats and sexual assaults by men in the U.S. military- and the powers that be refuse to take this seriously. It is no doubt that her dissappearance is directly related to her involvment in a court case on base, and no wonder the Marines are not so willing to get to the bottom of this.

as a disabled military officer, who's had to locate missing people before -- i'm flabberghasted at the length of time for this to be made public. first of all, when a military member is unlocatable, the next of kin are contacted. sometimes it's just a matter of crossed wires, and you find a family member, or roommate, or friend, or co-worker, and the person is found iwth in hours. three weeks missing, and she's pregnant, and it's just now coming out?? something isn't right here. her car, and cell phone are not with her (found outside the base) and she's very very pregnant -- having been pregnant, and near the time of birth, i can tell you, i wouldn't be leaving my cell phone anywhere, let alone my car. she's in personnel -- she'd know how awol / ua troops are located. regardless of all that, i sincerely hope, that she is found, healthy and safe, with her baby, and THEN we can demand answers of LeJeune, and the local sheriff's office.

I wish this would have been released previously. I hope they find the mother and baby well and safe and that next time, they will release a missing person much earlier than they did this time.

Posted by: Bob Location: Eagle, CO on Jan 9, 2008 at 03:45 PM
For her to be missing for such a long time without the military doing more to find her is strange. I was in the Army for 4 years and if someone was missing for several hours people scrambled to find them. This doesn't add up. They should have called her emergency contact to see if she had returned home - that should have been one of the first things they did. But the family did not find out about her missing status for many days. Very odd.

Posted by: anonymous Location: Illinois on Jan 9, 2008 at 03:26 PM
My late brother was also a Marine at Camp Lejeune. Due to my brother living off post it was Onslow County who was called to investigate his death rather than the Marines and they only called NCIS for assistance on their terms. It does not surprise me at all that they waited so long as this sheriff dept. is the worst ever. Their investigative skills are next to none. Even though there were some odd instances around my brothers death that can't be explained they immediately assumed it was a suicide and never even truly did an investigation. As a matter of fact, they didn't even question the last person to talk to my brother until 3 months after his death when my family pointed out they never had. Never questioned any neighbors or any other acquaintances. When trying to get someone to investigate the sheriff depts lack of concern we were told the sheriff was an elected official and only had to answer to voters. I wish this family well. No matter what they tell you please go to NC

Posted by: Delfine Location: Baltimore, MD on Jan 9, 2008 at 02:46 PM
No Kidding--Why did it take so long?? In the military, accountability is extremely important. You can't be missing for more than a few hours w/o it becoming a big deal, and have everyone wondering where you are. I wonder when she was first reported UA?

Posted by: Janice Location: Milwaukee WI. on Jan 9, 2008 at 02:45 PM
The Marine Corps and Army have a reputation of incidents, with females who serve in active duty. Which is sexual harrassment, rape, and or just treated differantly not equal to the male figures in the service. My major concern is why this young lady didnot have 24 hour police protection, for being a witness.

Posted by: Katheryn Location: Raleigh on Jan 9, 2008 at 02:43 PM
It is situations such as this that make imperative to provide proper sex education in school, which really is the science of biology. Too many men feel trapped by the prospect of having to father and care of children they don’t want. What makes it even sadder is they themselves could have prevented the pregnancy in question…if they had taken the responsibility. My prayers are with this Marine and her family during this time. But this would not continue if both men and women took an active part in utilizing proper birth control methods and little communication.

My son is a Marine and he was stationed at Camp Pendleton. His Command misplaced him for three days. Imagine getting that call. They too thought this was U/A but they finally located him with my help. He had been transferred from one hospital to another. My story has a happy ending and I hope this Marine and her baby has a happy ending too.

This town wouldn't be here without the base, I mean, Camp Lejeune more or less IS Jacksonville... how are we JUST NOW hearing about this?!? Most of us are on base at least 4 or 5 times a week, in and out of the front gate, why are there not posters up!?! I'm shocked at how little is being done here.

Posted by: Peter Location: Boston on Jan 9, 2008 at 02:31 PM
My heart goes out to the victims family and friends. I hope they find her for the sake of her own health and safety and of the babies. I myself am a former Marine, and its just sickening to know that they Marine Corps has not mentioned this sooner. Does seem like something is being covered up, just like everything else in the Government. Again my heart goes out to the family, and friends.

Posted by: Debbie Location: North Carolina on Jan 9, 2008 at 02:28 PM
Should have mentioned, we are civilians living within 5 miles of the base and still we just heard about it. There were numerous other civilian cases this year in the county, many miles from our little town and we heard lots. I feel that this women is being cheated the publicity that is needed in a missing persons case when time is so crucial.

Something is not right. Being a wife of a milatary man, I know that they are strict about leave. Her mother does not even know where she is at. I will pray everyday untill she is found. Something is not right AT ALL!! What is wrong here, and I have not even herd of this untill I seen it on this page! This makes me upset also being 7 month, pregnant, military wife. I just don't understand!?!?!?

That is a horrible thing to happen, and i hope that she is found before the baby is found and that the person who did it will be charged and go to jail for a long time. I also sope that the baby is born safely.

I'm sure they are talking to them, no one knows what that case is about. This is a small town people seem to always know whats going on but no one has a clue about the case. I'm sure they may be one of those persons of interest.

Posted by: Anonymous Location: Jacksonville NC on Jan 9, 2008 at 01:14 PM
Maybe they should try talking to the people involved in the court case. I get the feeling that it might have something to do with her disapperance.

Posted by: Kim Location: Camp Lejeune, NC on Jan 9, 2008 at 01:12 PM
To be honest with you as someone who Lives here, there are things being done aboard the base. Most everyone who lives here just got word of this within the past few days. Searches are ongoing. Extra precautions are being taken. Perhaps before guessing what goes one somewhere talk to the people who actually live there.

What's the deal with the Corps? This took way too long to be publicized and is still not as out there as it should be. Time is of the essence is missing persons cases and clearly someone knows something and is covering it up.

It is pretty sad that lately a lot of pregnant women have gone missing. There is something seriously going on in husbands, boyfriends etc minds. Its like A virus that is hard to contain, it just keeps on spreading. Something needs to be done.I dont have the answer but I do know that young women and their unborn children are being victimize to often. I hope that Marine soon to be mom is found ok. It's a scary world we live in when your spouce or significant other commits such hainous crimes against their "BABIES MOM"

Posted by: Tara Location: Athens, GA on Jan 9, 2008 at 12:54 PM
Why in the world isn't this getting CNN coverage? It's like you have to go and look for this information, which is sad. Other girls of the same age, without baby, are getting a lot more coverage? What's the deal here? Something "fishy" within the Corps? Hope not. Hope she gets home, safely. But, my question remains why isn't she getting the coverage that fellow American women are getting like the hiking victims?

Posted by: YMe Location: Virginia on Jan 9, 2008 at 12:35 PM
Just wondering when she was listed as missing from Marine Unit and what action thay have taken, when action was first taken and why a local sheriff department is involved and not NCIS...

Posted by: Jared Location: Raleigh, NC on Jan 9, 2008 at 12:35 PM
Why does everyone assume foul play? Let us first hope this Marine is found safe and sound with her baby. As a prior Marine who was stationed at Camp Lejeune, it could be a case of what the military calls U.A. (unauthorized absence). It happens all the time in the service.

Posted by: Don Location: GA on Jan 9, 2008 at 12:24 PM
Parents who really know their daughters know when something is wrong. I'd drive from Georgia to California if I thought my daughter was in danger. If she was ok when I got there, so be it.

I am so tired of women being killed by their spouses, significant others, etc. It was really upsetting to hear about the hiker in Georgia who was killed by the 61-year old man and then decapitated. I hope and pray that this missing pregnant Marine is found alive and well.

Why wait this long to post the missing person in the internet? Dec 19 ????? Missing Hiker came out right of way they already has all the evidences and someone behind bars --

Editor's note: The sheriff's department just released the information to the news media Tuesday afternoon. The story and picture were posted within minutes of that news release.

The number one cause of death and injury to pregnant women is homicide by an intimate partner. I really hope that is not the case, but the first person to look at is the father of the child. Sad to say it but he should be the number one suspect.

Posted by: e chase on Jan 9, 2008 at 11:19 AM
The second leading cause of death in pregnant women is homicide, usually in the context of domestic violence (paternity issues). Doesn't look good, does it? Why does it happen to pregnant women? Good question.

Posted by: Nancy Location: Ohio on Jan 9, 2008 at 11:10 AM
It is a crime in itself for the non-action of the Onslow County Sheriff's Dept. regarding the missing marine and mother-to-be. Now that the focus has turned to "their inaction", will we get any straight answers, or will they again be covering their own butts & pensions?

The Sheriff's Dept investigator first assigned to the case did not take the case seriously. He wasted valuable time telling the family he was investigating when he was not. He also told the family not to come to down to North Carolina. When this terrible situation is over this "lack of action" should be investigated as well.
