A Currituck County band director quit his job, just a day before he was arrested on sex charges involving a student.

Allan Coyle was charged Friday with six counts of sex offense with a student and six counts of indecent liberties with a student. Deputies say Coyle quit his job as band director at Currituck County High School on Thursday.

Deputies say the investigation began after parents of a 17 year old girl brought the allegations to their attention.

A school website says Coyle was an ECU graduate and had taught at Currituck for the past five years.

The 32 year old Coyle of Moyock posted a $240,000 bond Saturday morning.

I just want everyone to know that this crime has been swept under the rug and nothing has been done. What Coyle did is a crime and he should be punished. Something should also be done at the school for allowing it to happen. Even the press has given Coyle a pass! It's a dark day in Currituck.

unfortunately, I don't know why he was arrested and not just fired. the legal law since a few yrs back changed it to where you can have sex with anyone above the age of 16. NC law, so they have nothing to go on besides he may be a sick man. But the legal system in NC is terrible anyways and most people don't have any faith in it.

This teacher had a ethical obligation to the parents of this student child. He was allowed a position of trust for which he disregared for his own desires. The teacher has no right to have sexual contact with an underage student and I feel for the children of parents who would argue otherwise. If this was my child I would be furious. How would you feel if it was yours. The band members take trips to Canada, Florida, Alanta and they are taking these trips with this teacher. We send our children to learn not to have sex in the classroom. They have all the time in the world for grown up stuff once they are grown. I feel for the student for her innocence or at least her immaturity (emotional)was played on by this sexual predator. It is the ones we least expect that do these things. Read the news people, teachers, priest, judges, police officers-it is the "Pillars of our community doing many of these actions". What if it was your daughter, would you accept his actions? I could not.

In response to Tani----no, I did not do it and I expect differently from my children than what others are doing. I do not want my children having sex out of wedlock. It is unhealthy and the husband/ wife has a lot more respect for the spouse if they are virgins. This rediculous. We are told to save our bodies for our spouses. Let's teach them this. No, I didn't do this and I do not want my children to do it. I am sorry that there are parents out there who did and will admit this to their childen. This is a bad example.

I am a parent, it would make me mad if my daughter had sex with one of her teachers or anyone. I AM NOT GOING TO TELL HER IT'S OKAY TO HAVE SEX, JUST WEAR PROTECTION. IF YOU TELL THEM IT'S OKAY, THEY'RE GOING TO FOLLOW IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF ALL THESE NASTY GIRLS SLEEPING WITH ANYONE WHO WALKS IN FRONT OF THEM. THAT'S THE PROBLEM TODAY AND THAT'S WHY 10 YEAR OLDS HAVE SLEPT WITH 5 OR 10 GUYS ALREADY. B/C OF WHAT THEY'RE BEING EXPOSED TO, AND PARENTS ARE SAYING IT'S OKAY FOR YOU TO HAVE SEX JUST WEAR A CONDOM.

I am a parent and yes it would have made me mad if my daughter and one of her teachers were having sex, BUT, we can not control out kids all the time. We can just hope that they know right from wrong and will do right. I will never tell my kids (2 boys and a girl) they can not have sex, I will just tell them to use protection. If we tell kids they can not do things then they have a tendancy to do it anyway. Lets stop being wardens to our kids and start being parents. We did it when we were young and they will too!!!

I would like to see more coverage on this story. I feel that there is more here than what has been said. How come the principle of the school has not made a statement? There sure has been a lot of this type abuse in the news lately. Teachers sleeping with students. It is unethical to say the least. If it is true than the teacher has abused his position.

I know the alledged victim and wonder why the band director was allowed to take this student off high school grounds during school hours without the parents consent. Especially since he was caught previously taking kids off campus and was warned by school officials not to do it again. I know everyone else has to be signed out in the office by an individual approved by the parents before a child can leave school property. That alone makes me suspicious of him.

I'm a band student at Perquimans County High and I'm surpised to hear this because Mr. Coyle has been around the Perquimans program for years. He has never showed any signs of liking any band students. If he did commit this crime we shouldn't feel sorry for him we should feel sorry for his wife and two children. what's bad is his youngest son has down syndrome and is not even one and is gonna grow up without a father.

consensual or not, this man is a teacher (not to say he did it)and you have to separate the role as a teacher and the role as a make believe boyfriend. As far as a father figure. Lets be real, a father has a boundary he shouldn't cross. This man should know his boundaries.

What ever happened to innocent until proven guilty in this country?

Posted by: clueless Location: nc on Jan 9, 2008 at 03:10 PM
to resident in currituck, "as of ruining live".....i said if he is innocent and she was lying....remember that

The age of consent is 16 in NC. She is an adult. She is not claiming rape, so it's nobody's business. They are just two consenting adults. I think it's stupid to make someone resign. Parents can be over protective, but sometimes take it to far. Parents are just going to have to accept the fact that their daughters and sons are going to have sex.

It was wrong for a teacher to sleep with his student, but hey she knew exactly what she was doing and when the other kids found out no wonder she told someone. Who wants to be know as the girl sleeping with the teacher. She is a high school senior going to college in the fall will probalbly sleep with her profeesors there to

SIX COUNTS of committing sexual offenses, SIX COUNTS of taking indecent liberties. Sure, he was a great band director; he made the schools marching band the award winning band it is today but he was always too friendly with some of the students, especially the girls. (It's amazing what they can find on your computer these days.) Oh, and before everyone starts blaming a 17 year old girl (Robbie), don't forget that HE was the adult here. Even if she threw herself at him, he was a teacher AND married. And as to ruining lives, his inappropriate actions have ruined the lives of not only himself (whose Master's degree in music education is now just so much toilet paper), he's ruined the life of his wife, two children, is "girlfriend" and the countless students that were depending on recomendations from him to get into college music programs. (And let's not forget that the day he "resigned" the Jazz Band was killed too.)

I would not have quit my job. Why he quit his job? Some people would say he is guilty because of that.

Posted by: Robby Location: currituck on Jan 8, 2008 at 07:10 PM
As one of his students, I know there was a relationship among the accused. It seemed to be more of a father/daughter relationship more than a sexual one. My band director was a perfect director but always seemed to hold back feelings from the band. The "girl" was someone to talk to and he may be innocent. but my personal opinion is that he is guilty. It does take two to tango. "She" is not the innocent one here. If he is innocent, then she instigated it, if he is guilty, she was very open, literally. Please, let's not judge before the Judge judges. ha ha. We don't know for sure. As the other comment said "only God and that person knows." NOT THE VIEWERS.

I know the man and his wife are outstanding band directors and members of their community. In an effort to cover their tails, school systems force teachers accused of such crimes to immediately resign -that only makes them look guilty in the eyes of the news-viewing public. There are so many examples of kids accusing adults of things as a grudge and ruining lives, ruining careers and never being held responsible for their actions. You can't take back a charge like that as if it didn't happen. True or not, the family is ruined.

Posted by: Clueless Location: NC on Jan 8, 2008 at 11:04 AM
Diane, you're so right. You never know what to believe anymore. Young girls these days want attention in the wrong way, and do not care what the consequences are to other people. Also, a lot of things are happening to young girls. If he is guilty, then he should've kept his mind on teaching and not I'll see you after class action. If he is innocent, then the girl needs to grow up, get a life, and stop trying to ruin everyone else's. But, you just don't know these days. Only God and that person knows.

Posted by: Diane Location: Grandy on Jan 7, 2008 at 10:24 PM
Hope and pray he is innocent. Remember the principal in Norfolk who was accused of sexual harrassment, just because a girl wanting to get some attention. Believe nothing you hear and half of what you see in this county!
