The rate of diabetes among teenage and young adult women is skyrocketing, according to a new study.

Researchers from Kaiser Permanente looked at 175,000 women who gave birth between 1999 and 2005. The rate of women with diabetes who gave birth doubled in that six year period, with teen mothers seeing a five fold increase. Researchers are saying the rising obesity epidemic is to blame.

Experts say diabetics are more likely to have miscarriages, still births and babies with birth defects. They say women with diabetes should be sure to monitor their glucose levels closely when trying to become pregnant.
