The East Carolina softball team's doubleheader produced two extremely different results as the Pirates split a doubleheader with No. 18 Virginia Tech Tuesday afternoon at the Tech Softball Park. Angela Tincher no-hit ECU in game one as the Hokies took the contest 11-0 in five innings. However, the Pirates turned the tables in the second game, using a solid effort in the circle from junior Brooke Swann to earn a 4-1 upset victory. The Pirates move to 33-26 on the season while the Hokies now stand at 41-15.

Virginia Tech received a leadoff infield hit in the bottom of the first from Jenna Rhodes but she would be stranded as ECU starter Suzanne Riggs induced two groundouts and a foul ball out. The Pirates then loaded the bases with two outs in the top of the second via two hit batsmen and a walk but Hokie hurler Angela Tincher struck out Christina Merrida to end the threat.

Virginia Tech would take a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second when Misty Hall crushed a 3-0 pitch over the wall in left center. A one-out single and a stolen base in the bottom of the third by Jenna Rhodes put her in scoring position, which led to the Hokies' second run of the game when Erin Ota doubled to center field. Virginia Tech would make the score 3-0 when the next batter, Charisse Mariconda, pushed another double to right center, scoring Ota. A third consecutive double, this time by Misty Hall, extended the Hokie lead to 4-0 with two outs before Riggs induced a flyout to left field to end the inning.

A seven-run bottom of the fourth would be all that Virginia Tech needed to close out the game as the eight-run rule stopped play after the top of the fifth.

East Carolina scored the first two runs of game two on three consecutive one-out hits to take a 2-0 advantage in the top of the first inning. Vanessa Moreno accounted for one of the runs on a double to center that scored Charina Sumner while Erin St. Ledger poked a single through the right side that scored Moreno.

The Pirates added to their lead in the top of the sixth, when Stacey Andrews unloaded on a pitch and sent it sailing over the center field wall, scoring Erin St. Ledger who had walked right before to make the score 4-0. The long ball is Andrew's team-leading 10th of the season.

The Hokies spoiled the shutout in the bottom of the seventh, scoring a run but it would not be enough to deny ECU the upset.

ECU returns home this weekend to wrap up the regular season as it hosts UAB in a three-game set at the ECU Softball Field. The series is slated to begin Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
