Eatery Dishes It Up Just Like In The Good Old Days Last Updated: 3:52 PM 01/25/08 - Decades ago, herring shacks dotted the shores of the Roanoke River. From January to April, people would come from all over to eat herring cooked in the shacks. At one time, the Roanoke River was thought to be the largest fresh water herring fishery in the United States.
