Shark Attacks, Unfounded Fears And What Really Lies Beneath

It was a gorgeous weekend along North Carolina 's coast, as folks enjoyed the sun and sand.

But then came news that a boy received some sort of "marine bite" off Onslow County , and that sent a shiver down many a spine. Thankfully, it appears he will be okay.

My family spent a fair amount of time swimming and surfing in the ocean this weekend. I wouldn't be telling the truth if I said I never thought about what ELSE is swimming with us, gliding along under the waves. But each time I start to stress, I just remember the statistics.

Of all the rare ways to die, a shark attack is the least of your worries. You have a better chance of getting struck by lightning, injured with a power grinder or killed in a collapsing sand hole incident. (No, I am not making that up.)

So what's your chance of dying from a shark attack? 1 in 3,748,067.

Car crashes, boat accidents, illness, dog bites... all are much more likely to cause your demise.

So remember the statistics, as morbid as they may be, and hopefully they'll help you live it up in the wild, blue ocean.

You can check out more statistics here.
