Hannah Montana Star, Age 15, Appears Half Naked In Magazine Photo: Right or Wrong?

It's a rite of passage for many movie stars... a suggestive, skin-laden photo shoot in Vanity Fair. Think pregnant Demi Moore. Lindsey Lohan. NBC's "Heroes" Hayden Panetierre. Madonna. The list is a substantial one.

Now, Miley Cyrus, age 15, is in the VF hall of photo fame. In one photograph, the Hannah Montana star appears topless, holding a sheet over the front of her body. A rep says she is actually clothed underneath. Unfortunately for Cyrus, there is no sign of that in the photo. The teen star issued a statement, saying she is embarassed by the photos. She said she thought they would be artistic and did not expect them to turn out the way they did.

Vanity Fair hasn't said much about the photos, save they are staying up online and in the June issue. The magazine does have a video of the Cyrus shoot on it's website, with these words: "Annie Leibovitz's photographs of Miley Cyrus have caused quite a stir, but our exclusive video shows that the session was a relaxed family event in the picturesque hills of Calabasas, California."

As the news article said, this is the second time recently that racy photos have put Cyrus in the spotlight.  One showed her top pulled down to reveal part of a bra. Another showed her lying next to a boy with her stomach exposed. The photos have been circulating on the internet.

So what do you think about the controversy?

I have an 11-year-old daughter, and I've actually logged quite a few hours watching Hannah Montana. I've seen her 3-D concert movie. (Yes, I was one of the gazillions of parents who could not secure the real deal.) The Hannah Montana shows on Disney often have good messages, about sibling interaction, doing the right thing and supporting your friends. Positive messages.

But now, we have a different message from Miley Cyrus. I suppose you can thank Vanity Fair and the decision makers (her parents were with her during the shoot) who allowed the 15-year-old to pose appearing half nude.

I'm just wondering if that's a message parents want their preteen and teenaged children to see, and what, if anything, they plan to do. Nothing? Ban Hannah? Have a frank talk with their children? And here's another question: Should Miley Cyrus herself shoulder some or all of the responsibility for the shoot?

I hope you'll leave a comment and share your thoughts on this controversy.

Thnak you for hitting the nail on the head --this young girl was in the presence of her parents and they let someone do this to her--its a shame we let this happen to our children--thanks again for a great article!!!

It's disappointing that Miley and her parents made the decision to do this photo shoot. I sure hope she does not turn out like the Spears girls! It would be really nice to have a GOOD role model for our young girls! I have a 13 year old, and I definitely don't want her to think this is OK!

Miley Cyrus is way too ypoung to be in the entertainment business to start with! It's time that these young girls were banned from this business until they are twenty-one!!!!
