Storm Coverage: Too Much, Not Enough, Just Right?

It's not often you watch a tornado form on live video, from cloud to ground in the region where you live.  In fact, for most of us, it could be a once-in-a-lifetime event. That's exactly what we witnessed Sunday, as the WITN Washington webcam captured the actual birth of a tornado. We had that video live on the air as part of our continuing severe weather coverage. When all was said and done, two tornadoes touched down in Beaufort County during the storms.

There's no arguing... that tornado video is compelling. One person I talked to said the hair stood up on her husband's arms as he watched the live coverage. I just took a call, some 20 hours after the event, from a viewer thanking us for our storm updates, telling us we did a good job. E-mails expressed thanks as well. But there's another side.

Some of you were downright angry WITN interrupted the Red Wings-Predators hockey game for severe weather coverage. You called, and you sent e-mails, choosing words like “overkill,” “excessive” and “inappropriate.” I understand how you feel, and I appreciate your passion for the sport. We take our responsibility to serve you very seriously.  We work very carefully to balance regular programming and storm cut-ins. As you saw Sunday, when there is a serious threat, we are on the air.

Some of you suggested our coverage would have been shorter or eliminated if other teams and other sports had been on our air at the time of the storms. I love hockey. I have a fondness for the Penquins, having grown up watching them on TV and in person in Pittsburgh . I like the Hurricanes, part of my Carolina roots. And sure, we evaluate what's on, as well as its importance and impact, before cutting into programming. But yesterday, it wouldn't have mattered.  We had ideal conditions for tornadoes, and that’s what we got. One at 3:45 p.m., the other at 4:38 p.m.

At one point, we couldn’t have gone back to the hockey game even if we had wanted to… the same storms spawning the twisters were blocking out satellite signals. Network programming on primary and backup receivers disappeared. It took 15 minutes to get the signal back and even then it was spotty for a while.

While some of you had blue skies Sunday afternoon, your neighbors in Beaufort County faced a potentially deadly situation. WITN had to sound the alert, as hard and as long as the danger existed. It would have been irresponsible if we had not.  I hope it helps you to know that we will be here for you too, should tornado conditions threaten your area.

It seems to me people are giving a hockey game priority over their own personal safety. No one likes to have the show they are watching interrupted but if that is what it takes to save lives then so be it. I think WITN weather is by far the best. The interruption of a show just proves to me there is something severe going on that I need to be made aware of. Sure the scrolling at the bottom of the screen works for possiblities of severe weather but if it's actually headed my way...interrupt all you want to!! Keep up the good work WITN !!! The life your interruption of a show saves may be mine or one of my loved ones!! Thank you for caring about the people in your viewing area....

I can not believe ppl are complaining about the news coverage of these storms! These are the same ppl that would be injured in one of these storms and turn around and say "I didnt know there was a storm coming"! For those of you complaining there are hundreds of other things you could have watched on one of the cable channels! I have grandchildren and we were all together watching these storms so that we could be prepared! THANK YOU.....witntv for doing a GREAT job!!

There is a rainbow southeast of Beulaville at this very moment, though it's thundering in our background and the skies are still cloudy to the southwest.

Keep up those weather reports ! Your coverage is wonderful, timely and accurate most of the time ! Some of us depend on your weather in planning our days, whether its a work day or rest day. Thanks for what you do !

We will have weather whether or not!

MORE NEWS LESS WEATHER!

Just another example of how East Carolinians need to be spoon feed. I think it is time for some of you to think for yourselves. As for last weekend...good coverage. Also noticed how the weather updates didn't start till after the Pittsburg game. Also noticed the weather updates depend on who is playing.

I cannot believe people are complaning about this.

Monday was another example when I want my local TV station to not skimp on the weather coverage. Did you see the damage just over the Virginia state line? 200 people injured...neighborhoods leveled. What would the complainers say if those twisters had formed just 95 miles south and hit Greenville...and the local stations failed to warn everyone? I like Judge Mathis, but my personal safety is far more important!

I feel we need more news and less weather in the mornings. It seams like every 20 seconds you are covering the weather. As far as severe weather I feel like it is over sensationalized, I find myself not taking this stuff seriously anymore. It seams like all the channels are trying to out do each other with all the super duper doppler stuff. The coverage is a little much for me. Let us know there is a warning, where it is and where it's going , and get on with it. It's like after the state of the union address when they have to go on and on with what the President just said. Why not just let me figure it out for myself?.

I watch your network for most of my news needs. Being said, I am a big hockey fan, though I have a hard time watching the joke for hockey coverage NBC has. I found the weather coverage to be fine, but wouldn't it make sense to have the 2 hours of straight coverage on 7-2 and have updates on 7-1. I know you would have done the same no matter what was on.

Amazing that people question severe weather coverage when there were two confirmed tornadoes on the ground. Answer me this....how many people have died because they didn't get to see their hockey game? Now, home many people have died because they didn't known a tornado was bearing down on them? There's no argument here...I want a TV station to care about my family's safety first over entertainment programming.

you know what...Thank you. I actually sat and watched the entire coverage and, I am sorry but If I had to chose whether or not to watch hockey or prepare for a severe storm approaching...duh

Great coverage, especially during the tornadic coverage, although I got a little confused as to when you were talking about the t-storm and tornado activity!

I too have read your blog and find it funny...You know that if it was the Penguins game or even ACC basketball this would have never happened. What I don't understand is how you in one breath say how severe the weahter was, yet I still saw comercials being ran. If it was so severe, you would have never broken away. Second flaw in your blog is your statement about how the signal was blocked...yet I never saw ABC have a single problem with the Basketball game...hmm. Finaly, why did you need to flood three channels with the same programming? I understand the main channel 7 and I understand 7-2, but why have the same programming on 7-1 and 7-2 when you could have easily put the hockey game on 7-1? For future referece, if a person gets 7-2, then they get 7-1 and don't need to see the same thing twice. Now that you understand the HUGE mistake you made, maybe we won't have to deal with the same mistake again.

I understand the need for severe weather coverage, but the 2 1/2 hours of coverage from Marvin was absolute overkill. Not to mention that it also happened Saturday the 12th. "One person I talked to said the hair stood up on her husband's arms as he watched the live coverage."....my hair stood on end from listening to Marvin repeat his self for hours on end. Please do not try to tell me that if NASCAR or basketball was on that the same coverage from WITN would have occurred....garbage. Golf and the NBA playoffs were, for the most part, uninterrupted by WNCT and WCTI with the exception being when the need for NEW information became necessary. Don't you understand that viewers turn the station when information is being repeated over and over again? WNCT and WCTI coverage was just as informative without the annoyance. I know this because I turned from your station to their's. Enough with the excuses, just fix the issue!

I've read your blog, or excuse for the prolonged interruption to scheduled programing on Sunday. I do not buy your story. I have spoken with several people and all share my feeling...you were on for tooooooo long with your weather update. A scrolling message works for most viewers, but obviously those who cannot read or those in the car would not get your message. Shame on you and your arrogance for being inconsiderate of viewers. I personally have made the decission to watch other channels during the news/weather times for a while.

News Director Note: I appreciate your comments. I completely respect your decision to feel the way you do. However, I do not consider it "arrogance" to be passionate about serving the public, alerting them to danger and possibly saving lives. A crawl could not convey the severity of the situation Sunday. Two tornadoes touched down. Thanks again for writing and sharing your opinion.

I think Channel 7 Meteorologist did a excellent job on Sunday covering the Severe Weather. Both Marvin and Jamie could not have done any better. Thanks for all your hard work.

I find it interesting that during a playoff hockey game you chose to ignore the viewer who wanted to watch the planned program due to a severe weather event, yet today when Judge mathis is on you don't even put a runner on the bottom- yet EVERY other station in eastern NC at least has a runner at the bottom to warn about the current sever weather warning. It either looks like you are only concerned if it is in little Washington (your backyard) or if it cuts into a live program? You can say you did it for the safety of the viewer, but today's coverage proves otherwise. Hmm, would you have done that if it would have been a Tarheel-Blue Devil game in the ACC championship. Say what you want, we ALL know you wouldn't have. I think it's time for me to switch the channel I turn to for my news.

News Director's Note: I am sorry you feel that way. If we had an active tornadic cell like yesterday, you can bet your bottom dollar Marvin would be on the air right now. Fortunately, while we have had severe thunderstorm warnings this afternoon, we have not had any tornado activity today. We have been running crawls all afternoon since the storms moved in with updates as needed and also have information available at witntv.com.

Where are the digital TV channels. I rely on 7-2 for severe weather approaching!

About 2:30 pm we had high winds , rain & pea size hail in Falkland.

would have liked to known what was going on in Jamesville around 12:30-1:30 am this morning. Couldn't find anything out on the tv.

News Director's Note: There were no warnings in that area during that time frame, thankfully. We try to get warning information on the air in a minute or less, as much as possible.
